From the program director

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University. It is my pleasure to introduce you to a program that blends clinical excellence, surgical expertise, and a deep commitment to education and mentorship.

Our fellowship offers an exceptional, high-volume experience in the comprehensive care of athletes and active individuals of all ages. Fellows gain advanced, hands-on training in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee conditions, as well as complex sports-related injuries. Under the guidance of nationally recognized, fellowship-trained faculty in sports medicine, shoulder and elbow surgery, and hip arthroscopy, you will refine your technical skills while developing sound clinical judgment and a patient-centered approach to care.

What truly sets our program apart is the breadth of exposure and the collaborative spirit that defines our team. Fellows are integral members of our sports medicine service, participating in cutting-edge arthroscopic and open procedures, sideline and team coverage, and multidisciplinary care alongside athletic trainers, physical therapists, and nonoperative sports medicine physicians. You will have opportunities to engage in clinical and translational research, present at national/international meetings, and contribute to the academic mission of Corewell Health in West Michigan and Michigan State University.

At its core, our fellowship is designed to prepare you not only for independent practice but for leadership in the evolving field of orthopaedic sports medicine. We take pride in fostering a supportive environment where education, innovation, and professionalism thrive.

In addition, Grand Rapids offers an exceptional environment for both professional training and personal life. As Michigan’s second-largest city, it combines the energy of a thriving urban center with the warmth and accessibility of a mid-sized community. Fellows enjoy a lower than the national average cost of living, diverse neighborhoods, and a vibrant downtown filled with award-winning restaurants, arts, and entertainment. It’s a city that supports balance — where you can train at the highest level and still enjoy an outstanding quality of life.

It is my goal that every fellow who completes this program leaves not only as a skilled and confident surgeon, but also as a future leader in sports medicine — a physician who can impact patient care, mentor colleagues, and contribute to advancing the field. I look forward to the opportunity to meet motivated, curious, and passionate applicants who are eager to join our team and share in this mission.

Warm regards,
