Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Dearborn and Farmington Hills
The Orthopaedic Surgical Residency Program at Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital is a five-year program that encompasses general orthopaedics. Residents are prepared for the allopathic board certification examination. Residents are exposed to multiple facets of general orthopaedics including
- musculoskeletal trauma
- total joint replacement arthroplasty
- hand surgery
- arthroscopic surgery
- sports medicine
- spine surgery
- foot and ankle surgery
- pediatric orthopaedics
This residency program provides surgical experience to develop proficiency in operative and non-operative orthopaedics. The goal is to prepare residents to practice orthopaedic surgery at the end of the residency and be prepared for the certification examination by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
The training program is divided into several clinical services
- surgical services
- emergency room service
- office orthopaedics
Additional information
- on-site Skills Lab is available
- casting and taping clinics are also presented to the house staff
- compliance with the work hours policy is strictly enforced
- no outside rotations during the last six months of residency training

- Dearborn is a 632-bed teaching hospital with Primary Stroke Center Accreditation; Farmington Hills is a 330-bed hospital; both have Level II Trauma status
- Farmington Hills is a major osteopathic teaching facility with 12 residency and 5 fellowship programs; it is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
- Dearborn (formerly known as Oakwood Hospital) has 4 resident and 2 fellowship programs; it is affiliated with Wayne State University School of Medicine
- Program initially accredited by the AOA since 1962 and by the ACGME in 2017
- 4 residents per year chosen through NRMP as a Corewell Health Hospital program

Mission Statement
Our Mission is to train Orthopaedic Surgery Residents to provide excellent, high-quality orthopaedic care to a diverse population. The Farmington Hills and Dearborn Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares physicians to meet the demands of contemporary orthopaedic surgery practice in urban and suburban communities. Residents learn to provide patient- and family- centered care, contributing to the health and well-being of patients throughout the community.
Aims
- To prepare physicians for the practice of orthopaedic surgery by teaching the skills, knowledge and humanistic qualities that constitute the foundations of contemporary, high-quality orthopaedic practice.
- To responsibly diagnose, treat, manage and provide education to patients related to problems of high prevalence in the community.
- To provide for progressive responsibility for the experience to enable effective management of musculoskeletal diseases, disorders and injuries, and their treatment by medical, surgical and physical methods.
- To prepare graduates who are capable of autonomously practicing orthopaedic surgery, providing patient- and family-centered care, and promoting life-long learning to new skills and knowledge during their careers.
- To develop physicians able to monitor their own physical and mental well-being.
