Resident responsibilities

Orthopaedic residents are exposed to a daily orthopaedic educational series. The information covered within this series is presented in the morning, Monday through Friday, and ranges from journal clubs and lectures to text reviews and board preparation.

Residents attend the quarterly orthopaedic department meetings and are encouraged to attend the meetings of the Detroit Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the Michigan Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Journal clubs and specialty clubs are hosted by members of the department as well as gold standard topics that are held at various times during the year.

Further responsibilities of residents

The resident spends full time in orthopaedic surgery except for elective rotations in an allied department and out-service rotations
The resident acts as first assistant in orthopaedic cases assigned where applicable and records these first assists and also any second assists as required by the department and the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery
He or she keeps a log in non-operative orthopaedics in which he/she participates
He or she compiles a monthly summary of work done. Such records are to be available for review by the Department as required or requested in a timely manner. All logs are completed in accordance with the Academy of Orthopaedic requirements
Each resident participates in emergency call and the senior resident makes the call schedule and distributes it to medical education and department members, as well as being posted in the emergency room and orthopaedic floor
Medical records are completed on a timely basis. Discharge summaries are done at the time of discharge whenever possible
The American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics requires residents attend one of the annual meetings during their residency program
Residents participate in pre- and post-op care of all patients on the orthopaedic service
Residents assist in instructing interns and medical students on the orthopaedic service including preparation of presentations for the department and ensuring that rotating students are exposed to the subjects outlined in their college study program
Casting and taping clinics are also presented to the house staff
The resident is responsible for insuring completeness of hospital records on all patients on the orthopaedic service
The resident makes daily rounds and keeps well informed regarding the status of all patients on the orthopaedic service
The resident consults the responsible orthopaedic physician regarding therapeutic decisions. The resident is knowledgeable in the proper application for orthopaedic appliances and maintenance of these appliances
The resident is responsible for other duties as the department of orthopaedics, the medical education department and the chief orthopaedic resident determines from time to time
