Finding a specialist is the first step to treatment.
In Michigan, about 50,000 adults are living with a congenital heart condition and the population continues to grow. Thanks to medical advances, people born with congenital heart defects are living longer, healthier lives.
Congenital heart disease is a lifelong condition, even with successful surgery or treatments. While a surgeon can repair the original heart defect, adults living with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) may still experience long-term effects or complications even decades later.
Our team is on the leading edge of ACHD care. Our comprehensive services include early detection of complications, ongoing follow-up and support, and access to the most advanced treatment and research options.
If you were born with a congenital heart defect, a cardiologist who specializes in adult congenital heart disease should be part of your care team, even if you are not currently experiencing symptoms. This is recommended by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
ACHD is not the same as heart disease that can develop later in life. It can cause different long-term complications, that often need specialized care.
Our ACHD specialists work closely with primary care, other cardiologists, pulmonologists, neurologists, kidney experts, and other specialists to identify emerging health problems as early as possible and provide appropriate, advanced care.
Our ACHD programs are led by physicians who are board-certified in ACHD care. Corewell Health is one of only two fully accredited ACHD Centers in Michigan as designated by the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association. Our specialized teams deliver care that meets the highest national standards, offering advanced diagnostics, transcatheter and surgical treatments, as well as support services.
Our ACHD experts partner with specialists throughout Corewell Health and other health care organizations to provide individualized support to meet our patients’ needs, including behavioral health, pregnancy counseling, nutritional counseling, and more.
