Compassionate, kid-friendly care

Bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing germs can spread easily between kids, who may not be able to fight off infections as easily as adults due to their still-developing immune systems. While some infections — like the common cold — might resolve easily on their own, treatment is sometimes needed to restore your child’s health as quickly and safely as possible.

Our infectious disease specialists provide expert consultation, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment for all types of infectious diseases — with special attention and care for immune-compromised children who are at a higher risk of developing both mild and more serious infections. Whether your child is experiencing persistent symptoms that need diagnosis or has a known illness, we can help.

Why choose us

Complete care for complex infections

Our pediatric infectious disease team collaborates seamlessly with cancer doctors, transplant experts, and other medical specialists. The goal is to build personalized, coordinated care plans that not only ease symptoms, but target the root causes and contributing factors to your child’s illness — including tough-to-treat infections like recurrent pneumonia, congenital infections, and more.

Family centered

Our mission is to combine leading-edge expertise with compassionate, family-centered care. Our teams support families every step of the way, fully explaining conditions and treatment options, and guiding them through therapies. This gives children the best possible chance at recovery and long-term health.

Innovative leaders

We are committed to improving our understanding of new and existing infectious agents and developing better methods of treatment. In addition to our own research efforts, we leverage strategic partnerships with Michigan State University and Children’s Miracle Network to ensure every child has access to exceptional care.

Smart approach to medication

The best way to treat infections is by using the right medications, in the right amounts, at the right time — all based on your child’s unique needs and situation. Focused treatments lead to better, safer outcomes for our patients. They also keep our communities safe, since misusing or overusing medications that target infectious microorganisms can accelerate the natural development of treatment-resistant germs.

Conditions we treat

Our team treats a wide variety of infectious diseases and related conditions common in children, including:

Services we provide

We offer an extensive range of services and treatments to help children recover from infectious diseases as quickly and safely as possible. They include:

Antiviral medications

These drugs target specific viruses, interfering with their ability to hijack cells and replicate themselves. Treatment goals may include shortening the duration of illness (if the condition is temporary or curable), as well as the severity of symptoms.

Antifungal medications

These drugs are designed to kill fungi or stop them from growing. They may be administered through pills, injections, or a topical skin cream, depending on the infection and your child’s health circumstances.

Immunodeficiency evaluation

These tests help us determine the overall effectiveness of your child’s immune system. This information helps us determine which treatments or procedures will be the most effective at helping them prevent, manage, and treat various infectious diseases.

International adoptee appointments

Comprehensive evaluation to determine if your new child is carrying any infections that need treatment or if any other health care services (such as vaccinations) are recommended.

Long-term IV and oral antibiotics therapy

If your child has a serious bacterial infection that requires long-term treatment, we may start them with IV antibiotic medications at the hospital. As their condition improves, we will help your family manage the transition to antibiotic pills they can take at home.

Screening and treatment after assault or needlestick injuries

Sexual contact, being poked by a used needle, and other intentional or accidental exposure to someone else’s body fluids are the main ways that kids and adults contract blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis. If you think your child may have been exposed to a blood-borne infection, an initial visit should be with a primary care doctor, same-day care location or emergency department.

Specialized care for bone, joint, brain, and heart infections

Our infectious disease team collaborates with experts in multiple medical specialties to provide advanced care for infections that target these areas of the body, since they are especially likely to trigger more complex and severe symptoms and complications.
