Advanced care for young immune systems

Our pediatric allergy and immunology specialists in Southeast Michigan care for infants, children, and adolescents with allergies, asthma, and immune system disorders.

Healthy immune systems are how children’s bodies recognize and eliminate germs and other substances that don’t belong. But if your child has a problem with their immune system, it may not be strong enough to protect them from infections. Or they may develop allergies that cause their immune system to identify substances that should be harmless (like pollen, food, or pet fur) as serious threats.

If your child is struggling to feel their best due to allergies or an immune disorder, we can help. Our specialists offer state-of-the-art treatment and are dedicated to helping them stay strong, active, and healthy.

Services we provide

Treatments and services we offer include:

Allergy testing

Doctors expose a child to a small, controlled dose of a suspected allergen, then closely monitor for signs of a reaction in order to make a diagnosis. Tests include:

  • Allergy skin testing: Skin is exposed to a suspected allergen via skin prick (for upper layers of skin) or needle injection (for lower layers of skin)
  • Medication challenge: Your child takes small doses of a drug they are suspected to be allergic to
  • Oral food challenge: Your child eats a small amount of food they are suspected to be allergic to

Biologic treatments

These are medications made from living tissue. They are used to treat several complex, difficult-to-treat allergies and autoimmune diseases. Examples include biologics that treat severe asthma, as well as immunoglobulin replacement therapy, which supplies the body with antibodies needed to fight infections.

Drug desensitization therapy

This therapy temporarily trains a child’s immune system to tolerate a drug they are allergic to, by starting with small doses that gradually increase over time. It may be necessary if the drug is needed to treat another condition they have.

Immunotherapy shots

Injecting a small dose of an allergen over a long period of time can desensitize the body to that allergen. This can be an effective way to significantly reduce symptoms of seasonal and environmental allergies.

Pulmonary function tests

Breathing tests that measure lung function. They may be used to diagnose asthma.
