Pharmacy Residency Program at Dearborn

The purpose of the PGY-1 pharmacy residency program is to build upon PharmD education and outcomes by contributing to the development of clinical pharmacists who are 1) responsible for pharmacotherapeutic care of patients with a wide range of conditions, 2) eligible for board certification, and 3) strong candidates for acceptance to PGY-2 residency programs.

The PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital is a 12-month program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) designed to prepare the resident for independent practice in a clinical environment. The resident will acquire an extensive skillset and sophisticated clinical experience that will allow for the provision of advanced pharmaceutical care in a wide variety of disease states. Graduates of the residency program will have the ability to practice and teach effectively in multiple settings.

The pharmacy resident will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinical pharmacy specialists and other pharmacists to build upon and gain knowledge in a wide variety of areas and with patients at a variety of levels of care. The PGY-1 residency program will be tailored to the needs of the resident based on previous clinical experience and future interests.

The PGY-1 pharmacy residency program at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital will give you:

• Training in a 632-bed teaching and research hospital with a Level II trauma center and a primary stroke center, rated high-performing in 14 procedures/conditions by the U.S. News & World Report
• Learning experiences in both clinical and non-patient care areas
• Unique longitudinal ambulatory care clinic learning experiences
• Precepting opportunities for students in doctor of pharmacy programs
• Participation in the leadership development program with pharmacy residents from other Corewell Health locations
• Participation in the research development program with pharmacy residents from other Corewell Health locations
• Participation in the Corewell Health East Research Day
• Teaching certificate through Wayne State University’s post graduate pharmacy teaching and learning curriculum
• Year-long support from an advisor to ensure goals are being met throughout the residency year

Learning experiences are predominantly in 5-week blocks. Residents will complete all required learning experiences and choose 4 elective learning experiences for the remainder of their schedule. Residents will also complete a series of concurrent extended learning experiences in ambulatory care settings consisting of one half-day every other week. Extended longitudinal learning experiences will span the entire year.

Required extended learning experiences (12 months)

• Hematology/oncology and HIV clinic (every other Thursday afternoon)
• Medical emergency response coverage
• Continuing education
• Research project
• Staffing commitment (every third weekend plus one afternoon every four weeks)

Other expectations

• Attendance at pharmacy staff meetings, and pharmacy and therapeutics sub/committee(s)
• Research project presented at ASHP midyear clinical meeting and regional residency conference
• Pharmacy education (e.g., pharmacy grand rounds, CE presentation, learn and grow in-services, department newsletter, and more)
• Precept IPPE and APPE students
• Presentation to medication use committee (i.e., formulary review and/or new protocol development and/or results of MUE)
• Rotating chief resident appointment
• Teaching certificate program provided through Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
• Update a collaborative annual department portfolio

PGY1 pharmacy residents will receive a competitive compensation package which includes an annual salary, health benefits, and paid time off.

Compensation:

• The approximate PGY1 salary is $58,700/year

Paid time off (PTO):

• Annual accrual of 216 hours per year based on an exempt employee status
• Residents are allowed to use PTO during the year
  • No more than 1 day per rotation block contingent upon approval
  • PTO cannot be used for required staffing shifts
  • Remaining PTO hours will be paid out at completion of employment

Project days:

• In addition to research month, a one project day is granted per rotation block

Reimbursement:

Approved travel to conferences is at the discretion of the organization. Previously attended conferences have included the ASHP midyear clinical meeting if travel funding is available. If travel approved, paid travel expenses (hotel, registration, transportation) for each conference will typically be approved up to $3,000. If expenses are expected to exceed $3,000, approval will be determined on a per-case basis.

The PGY1 program at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital accepts 3 residents. The program is accredited through ASHP and participates in the National Matching Service. All PGY1 residency applications will be accepted through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS).

Applicant qualifications:

• Graduate of an ACPE-accredited doctor of pharmacy program or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Assocation of Board of Pharmacy (NABP)
• Eligible to work in the U.S. for the entire 52-week duration of residency
• Eligible for pharmacist licensure within 120 days of start date
