Embracing belonging

Achieving our best health means embracing who we are — the qualities that make each of us unique and exceptional. At Corewell Health, we lead with heart and purpose, honoring the richness of our individual experiences and perspectives. We create spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued — from our team members to our patients, families, health plan members, and communities. Together, we build a culture where everyone can thrive.

What is belonging?

At Corewell Health, we believe that belonging begins with a culture that values people for who they are and encourages authentic participation. In many ways, belonging is the goal—ensuring that everyone not only has a place and a voice, but also feels confident sharing their ideas and knows they are respected and appreciated by those around them.

Belonging is not just about welcoming people, it is about co-creation. It happens when individuals are empowered to help shape the systems, they are a part of. At Corewell Health, we embrace belonging as a practive of co-creation, where diverse people, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences are fully integrated into how we care, lead, and serve. Our Belonging team is dedicated to co-creating a culture that bridges across differences and builds environments where team members, patients, health plan members and communities can thrive. When people truly feel they belong, trust deepens, care improves, and innovation takes root to drive meaningful outcomes.

Our approach

Our vision is to create an environment where people from all backgrounds feel respected, supported, and empowered. We aim to make this mindset central to everything we do—shaping how we care for one another, how we work together, and how we serve our communities.

To get there, we know we need to:

  • Foster a workplace where every individual feels respected, heard, and empowered.
  • Ensure our policies, practices, and decisions reflect fairness and compassion.
  • Create opportunities for growth, collaboration, and meaningful contribution.
  • Listen actively to the voices and experiences of our team members and communities.
  • Hold ourselves accountable to building a culture where everyone can thrive.

How we’re moving forward

When our team reflects the rich backgrounds and experiences of the communities we serve, we’re better equipped to meet their needs with empathy and understanding. Here are a few ways we’re working to increase representation across our workforce.

Business resource groups

Corewell Health’s Business Resource Groups (BRGs) offer team members a space to connect around shared backgrounds, experiences, or interests—and to build bridges across different communities. These team member-led groups are becoming a powerful platform for career growth and professional development, helping individuals thrive and contribute meaningfully across our organization.

Implicit bias training

Research shows that teams made up of people with varied backgrounds and perspectives make better decisions, are more productive, and experience stronger engagement—especially when they work in environments that foster trust and belonging. Corewell Health is committed to strengthening our workplace culture through a range of strategies, including training to help team members recognize and address unconscious bias.
