This is a one-year, preceptor-based fellowship that provides a broad scope of educational opportunities. The fellow is under the direction of 4 fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgery faculty, each with years of experience and specific areas of expertise.
Clinically, the fellow will be exposed to common, uncommon, and complex conditions in a high-volume, private practice setting. One of the distinguishing features of our program’s surgical experience is an invaluable case mix of common foot and ankle procedures as well as extensive exposure to complex ankle arthroplasty, revision ankle arthroplasty, limb deformity and limb salvage procedures. A large number of these cases are performed in an ambulatory surgical setting.
Additionally, our institution has a well-established orthopedic research program. Dedicated and protected time for clinical, translational, and basic science research is an important part of our fellowship program.
Regarding our fellowship program curriculum, every requisite condition and surgical procedure defined by the AOFAS curriculum guide will be comprehensively and repetitively covered. Structured didactics attended by faculty, residents, and fellows are scheduled weekly and will follow a rotating curriculum guide. Educational activities also involve periodic journal clubs and occasional state and/or regional symposia.
Our mission is to train orthopedic foot and ankle fellows through a broad, comprehensive scope of educational opportunities in a patient-and-family-centered care setting. The distinguishing features the orthopedic foot and ankle fellowship program at Royal Oak/Troy are extensive surgical experience through a case mix of common, uncommon, and complex conditions in urban and suburban community hospitals as well as protected research and education time. Our Fellows develop these technical and research skillsets in a high-volume setting, while learning to simultaneously provide compassionate, extraordinary care to our community.
