Historical overivew
The cardiovascular research program at William Beaumont University Hospital has a long legacy of innovation and has been at the forefront of many advances in the field. In the 1970s, Drs. Gerald Timmis and Seymour Gordon were among the first to study intracoronary streptokinase for acute myocardial infarction. In the 1980s, Drs. William O’Neill and Cindy Grines started a series of pioneering trials of primary angioplasty that ultimately established PCI as the standard of care for reperfusion therapy.
In the 1990s, Dr. Robert Safian, performed the first stent procedure in Michigan and spearheaded numerous device trials for complex coronary artery intervention. In the early 2000s, Dr. Simon Dixon led several trials of novel reperfusion therapies including hypothermia and supersaturated oxygen.
In 2004, Beaumont was the first center in the country to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In the mid 2000s Drs. Gil Raff, Michael Gallagher and Kavitha Chinnaiyan performed the first clinical trials of cardiac CT for evaluation of chest pain that ultimately led to adoption of CT as the preferred imaging modality. Subsequent studies ushered in the use of FFR-CT and plaque characterization.
In the 2010s, Drs. David Haines and the electrophysiology faculty led many of the cutting-edge trials of pulsed-field ablation for atrial fibrillation that has reshaped the field.
Fellow research
Today the program remains firmly committed to clinical research with numerous ongoing clinical trials and investigator-initiated studies seeking to address important clinical questions that advance patient care. Our fellows are currently involved in research of novel structural interventions, echocardiographic evaluation of aortic valve pathologies, non-invasive and invasive evaluation of vulnerable plaque, cutting edge coronary CT angiography software applications, atrial fibrillation ablation, advanced multimodality imaging, high-fidelity virtual reality simulation, and telerobotic endovascular interventions.
Cardiology fellows are required to perform an original research project during the training program, the nature of which can range from retrospective analyses to prospective studies. Fellows are encouraged to submit abstracts to national scientific meetings and will receive support to present their work at these conferences. The program also provides the opportunity to participate in ongoing multicenter clinical trials.
