State-of-the-art monitoring and care

Corewell Health has Neurosciences Intensive Care Units (ICUs) at several hospitals across the state providing advanced monitoring and treatment for some of the most challenging neurologic conditions patients face, including brain injuries, stroke, and brain tumors. Working together, our cross-disciplinary teams of specialists also treat patients who are post-op from a neurosurgical procedure.

Services we provide

Advanced monitoring

ICP, cEEG, and neurovascular monitoring tracks intracranial pressure, brain activity, and blood flow to detect and manage critical neurological changes.

Neuroimaging

Diagnostic techniques like MRI and CT scans visualize the brain and detect abnormalities.

Non-surgical and surgical interventions

Treatments ranging from medication management to surgical procedures serve to relieve pressure on the brain.

Post-ICU care

Follow-up treatments that support recovery and help restore neurological functions.

What loved ones and visitors can expect

The Neurosciences ICU can be a very busy place with multiple care teams focusing on patients. Visitors should be prepared to see a complex array of lines, tubes, and equipment surrounding patients.

Care teams are made up of specialists, residents, and nurse practitioners or physician assistants who are assigned to support the care experience of each patient. The length of stay in the Neurosciences ICU varies with each patient.

Families are encouraged to designate a spokesperson to consult with the ICU team, ensuring consistent updates and patient privacy. Recognizing the emotional challenges families face, the ICU staff provides guidance on comforting patients, such as orienting them to time and place or bringing familiar items from home. Finally, to help ease your mind, the unit offers resources to help families understand the medical equipment and procedures taking place.
