Experts in brains and behavior

Brain conditions and injuries can disrupt the way your child thinks, feels, or behaves. These cognitive and behavioral challenges can make it more difficult to succeed in school, develop healthy social interactions, enjoy playtime, or manage other daily tasks.

Neuropsychology is an area of psychology that studies the link between medical brain disorders (such as concussions, brain tumors, and epilepsy) and human behavior. If your child is struggling, our pediatric neuropsychology team can provide personalized evaluations, therapies, and interventions to help them address functional challenges and gain new skills and confidence.

Conditions we treat

Pediatric neuropsychologists help children manage cognitive or behavior challenges (such as difficulty with attention, impulse control, language, memory, or problem solving) that are directly linked to an underlying brain or nervous system condition. Some of the conditions we work with include:

  • Brain tumors
  • Epilepsy
  • Central nervous system infections
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Demyelinating disorders
  • Drug or toxin exposure
  • Hypoxia/anoxic events (such as near drowning and cardiac arrest)
  • Movement disorders
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Neurofibromatosis
  • Neurovascular conditions
  • Traumatic brain injuries and concussions
  • Tuberous sclerosis
  • Other underlying medical conditions that can affect brain function (such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, congenital heart disease, or metabolic syndromes)

Services we provide

In most cases we begin with a cognitive assessment. These evaluations help our team identify your child’s cognitive and behavioral strengths and weaknesses with a personalized selection of tests that measure a variety of specific abilities (such as language skills, memory, and problem solving). The results help us diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and offer guidance on educational planning. This may include:

Behavioral therapy

Our pediatric neuropsychologists may provide a variety of therapeutic techniques to help children understand, manage, and modify their unwanted or negative thoughts and behaviors.

Memory training

Guided exercises and therapies that build memory skills like attention, concentration, or working memory (the ability to temporarily hold onto and recall information in order to solve problems or complete tasks).
