Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics

Children with ADHD have persistent, significant difficulty with one or more of the following: inattention (such as paying attention to instructions or staying organized), hyperactivity (such as not being able to sit still), or impulse control (such as regularly interrupting others or not being able to wait their turn).

This condition affects how children understand and experience the world and others. Common signs can include difficulty with communication and social interactions, strongly focused on specific interests, repetitive behaviors, rigid need for routines, and differences in sensory processing (such as hypersensitivity to light or sound).

Although all children develop differently, therapy may be recommended if a child has not yet met certain developmental skills and milestones (such as speaking, walking, holding objects, or social skills) by an expected age. Physical and occupational therapy programs are offered through Pediatric Rehabilitation.

Conditions that impair one or more of a child’s cognitive functions (such as the ability to learn, reason, or think abstractly), which may set back their ability to develop everyday life skills needed for independence.

These conditions affect a child’s ability to master specific information processing skills, such as reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or math (dyscalculia). Children with learning disabilities may struggle in one or more academic areas but typically have broadly normal intelligence and intellectual capabilities.

These mood disorders can result in deep, long-lasting feelings of sadness, fear, anxiety, or irritability. These can negatively affect a child’s concentration, sleep, energy, thought patterns, and overall well-being. Moderate to severe symptoms are managed by Pediatric Behavioral Health.
