When every minute counts

From the first moment your child experiences a medical emergency, the pediatric emergency, trauma, and critical care teams at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital are ready to provide the highest level of care when it matters most.

Our emergency department, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) work closely with medical specialists across the hospital to deliver timely and advanced treatment. Spaces and programs are designed with kids and families in mind, including calming, private rooms and child life and family support services for patients, parents, and their loved ones.

We are the only hospital in West Michigan to earn the highest possible designations for pediatric trauma care from the American Trauma Society (ATS) and NICU care from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Pediatric emergency and trauma care

Our board-certified pediatric emergency medicine specialists provide immediate care for infants, children, and adolescents up to age 18 with serious injuries, severe illnesses, or life-threatening conditions. Our pediatric emergency department is purpose-built for children, with private rooms, advanced diagnostic tools (including MRI and CT scans), and child life specialists on hand who are trained to meet the emotional needs of children and their families.

At Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital we are a designated Level I pediatric trauma center, meaning we can provide complete care for every aspect of injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. General surgeons are on site and available 24/7, and other specialists are available when needed.

We collaborate closely with physicians and specialists throughout the hospital to ensure your child receives comprehensive care. Children who require further monitoring or treatment after their condition stabilizes may be transferred to a critical care unit.

Pediatric critical care

Our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) provides the around-the-clock monitoring and the highest level of care for infants, children, and adolescents with life-threatening conditions, traumatic injuries, or during recovery from major surgery.

Children are supported by state-of-the-art medical equipment and a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, therapists, nutrition specialists, and social workers. Our family-centered facility includes private treatment rooms, family lounges, and unlimited visitation for loved ones.

Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

The NICU provides the specialized care for newborn babies that need constant monitoring or treatment due to premature birth, critical illness, or other serious conditions. Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is a Level IV NICU, the highest possible designation, in recognition of our ability to perform advanced surgical procedures and provide complete care for newborns with rare and complex conditions.

Our multidisciplinary team includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, dietitians, physical therapists, and pharmacists who collaborate closely to develop individual care plans and provide timely decisions about each baby’s care. We will also connect parents and caregivers with medical and surgical specialists who can provide ongoing follow-up care after your newborn is discharged from the NICU.

Parents, siblings of any age, and other invited loved ones aged 16 or older are welcome to visit with NICU patients with at least one parent present. Our family-centered treatment rooms are equipped with Angel Eye, a secure high-resolution video monitoring system that allows loved ones to be with their newborn virtually even when they cannot be physically present.

Pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU)

The PCICU at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids provides specialized care for children who need intensive care due to a heart-related condition, procedure, or surgery. It is the only facility of its kind in West Michigan.

Critical care transport services

Our dedicated critical care transport ambulance includes a mobile PICU with specialized supplies and equipment for children, with team members ready to provide care and communicate with the hospital during your child’s trip. This service is available across Michigan, with air transport available, when necessary, due to distance and critical conditions.

Personalized care for high-risk pregnancies

A number of factors can increase the risk of birth complications — for example, if the mother is over age 35 or pregnant with multiple babies, has a pre-existing condition (such as obesity or heart disease), or develops pregnancy complications (such as preterm labor or preeclampsia).

Our maternal-fetal medicine team brings together a range of experts including board-certified specialists in high-risk obstetrics, ensuring you receive the highest level of care. We provide expectant mothers with a comprehensive care plan that outlines what to expect before, during and after delivery when a congenital fetal anomaly has been detected. When necessary, we can perform minimally invasive surgery on an unborn child to treat certain conditions.
