Care for diabetes and other hormone disorders

Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine disorders and chronic health conditions in the United States. It affects people of all ages — including an increasing number of children and teens. If your child has recently been diagnosed or is having difficulty keep their blood sugar at a healthy level, we can help.

In addition to diabetes, our pediatric endocrinologists care for kids with wide range of endocrine disorders. These conditions affect a child’s endocrine glands and hormones, which are chemicals that regulate nearly every major body process, including physical growth, sexual development, and the way the body gets energy from food. Keeping hormones in balance helps kids grow in a healthy way and feel their best.

Why choose us?

Family support

Many endocrine disorders, such as type 1 diabetes, require lifelong care. We provide resources and support for families adjusting to a new diagnosis, including educational information, medical social work services, and more.

Multispecialty collaboration

Endocrine disorders often affect multiple body parts and processes. Our team partners closely with specialists in pediatrics, cancer, genetics, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and many others to ensure your child has the complete care they need for healthy growth, development, and well-being.

Personalized care

Diabetes, hormone imbalances, and other endocrine disorders affect each child differently. Our board-certified endocrinologists build individual treatment plans tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Research-focused

We actively participate in research studies that help improve early detection, medication, and treatment for diabetes and other endocrine disorders. And we also incorporate the latest medical research, best practices, and technology into our treatment recommendations.

Conditions we treat

Our pediatric endocrinologists diagnose, manage, and treat hormonal disorders in infants, children, and adolescents, including:

Services we provide

Our pediatric endocrinologists, dietitians, and other specialists provide advanced, team-based care to help children and families manage diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Our services include:

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)

A wearable device that measures blood sugar levels 24 hours per day and sends the results directly to a display device (such as a smartphone app) or directly to an insulin pump.

Diabetes screening

Regular monitoring and screening tests for children at high risk of developing diabetes.

Dietary counseling

Adjusting your child’s eating habits can improve the symptoms of many endocrine disorders, including diabetes. We provide nutritional guidance and help you develop meal plans that are appropriate for your child’s specific needs.

Hormone therapy

Pills or injections of synthetic hormones (medications that mimic hormones in the body) can compensate for a hormone deficiency. Examples include growth hormone therapy to stimulate growth in children with short stature or thyroid hormone replacement therapy for children with hypothyroidism.

Insulin pump

A small, wearable pump that delivers insulin directly to the bloodstream. It can be set to deliver continuous small doses throughout the day (basal insulin), only when you manually trigger it (manual mode), or automatically as needed according to real-time data from a continuous glucose monitor.

Medication therapies

A variety of medicines can help restore hormonal balance, for example by shrinking or suppressing glands that are producing too much of a particular hormone.

Surgery

Surgery may be recommended to treat thyroid cancer or to remove benign tumors that are causing an endocrine gland to produce too much of a specific hormone.
