Each academic year, two Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in West Michigan resident physicians are accepted into the Health, Education, Access and Leadership Scholars (HEAL) program.
The Health, Education, Access, and Leadership Scholars program is an initiative designed to enhance unity, advocacy, and belonging in the physician workforce in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Following acceptance, HEAL scholars pursue a project centered around leadership, advocacy, and/or community engagement. Each scholar is paired with a dedicated faculty mentor to guide them through their journey. Additionally, scholars take on the role as mentors, providing valuable support and guidance for medical students in the community throughout their time in the program.
Scholars must be matched in one of Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine's 3-year primary care residency programs (pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine) or the emergency medicine residency program. Scholars should have a desire to invest in the West Michigan community and show passion for overcoming obstacles to achieve accessible health and education.
Applications are now closed for the 2025-26 academic year. Applications are accepted each year until May 1, after medical students have matched in an eligible program with Corewell Health in West Michigan.
