The Lakeland Emergency Medicine Residency Program is committed to providing residents with comprehensive, hands-on training that extends beyond the clinical setting. Through structured participation in community-based sporting and recreational events, residents gain valuable experience in acute care delivery within dynamic, non-traditional environments. These opportunities foster the development of clinical acumen, adaptability, and leadership while reinforcing the program’s dedication to community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Event medicine experiences serve as a vital complement to traditional emergency department training, preparing residents to manage a broad spectrum of medical presentations in real-time, high-pressure scenarios.
Emergency medicine residents participate in medical coverage at the nationally recognized RedBud Motocross event held in Buchanan, Michigan. This high-adrenaline environment offers residents exposure to trauma-related injuries, environmental challenges, and crowd medicine. Working alongside seasoned EM faculty and event medical teams, residents gain valuable experience in rapid assessment, triage, and acute care in a setting that demands adaptability and clinical precision. The RedBud event exemplifies our commitment to providing diverse, real-world training opportunities that prepare residents for the unpredictable nature of emergency medicine.
Emergency medicine residents who pursue the longitudinal track in sports medicine gain hands-on experience through sideline coverage at local high school athletic events, most notably with the St. Joseph Bears football team. This unique opportunity provides residents with direct exposure to sports-related injuries, on-the-field assessments, and real-time decision-making. Working alongside experienced EM faculty, residents develop clinical confidence and deepen their understanding of musculoskeletal and acute care in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

We are proud to participate in the Jim DeLapa Collegiate Tournament held at Point O’ Woods Golf & Country Club in Benton Harbor. As a sponsoring member of the amateur golf event, Corewell Health Lakeland supports the tournament through its medical services. Over the three-day tournament, EM residents’ staff the medical tent, providing care and support to participants and attendees, showcasing their clinical skills and commitment to community engagement.
