The Lakeland Emergency Medicine Residency Program is committed to providing residents with comprehensive, hands-on training that extends beyond the clinical setting. Through structured participation in community-based sporting and recreational events, residents gain valuable experience in acute care delivery within dynamic, non-traditional environments. These opportunities foster the development of clinical acumen, adaptability, and leadership while reinforcing the program’s dedication to community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Event medicine experiences serve as a vital complement to traditional emergency department training, preparing residents to manage a broad spectrum of medical presentations in real-time, high-pressure scenarios.
Emergency medicine residents participate in medical coverage at the internationally recognized RedBud Motocross event held in Buchanan, Michigan. This high-adrenaline environment offers residents exposure to trauma-related injuries, environmental challenges, and crowd medicine. Working alongside experienced EM faculty and event medical teams, residents gain valuable experience in rapid assessment, triage, and acute care in a setting that demands adaptability and clinical precision. The RedBud event exemplifies our commitment to providing diverse, real-world training opportunities that prepare residents for the unpredictable nature of emergency medicine.
Emergency medicine residents who choose the sports medicine rotation gain hands-on experience through a variety of community athletic coverage opportunities. Highlights include working with the St. Joseph Bears high school football team, as well as supporting the men’s and women’s basketball and soccer programs.
Residents with a strong interest in sports medicine or those planning to pursue a sports medicine fellowship, can opt into a dedicated sports medicine track. This enhanced training pathway offers deeper immersion in the field and complements core emergency medicine education.
Through this unique experience, residents are exposed to sports related injuries, on-the-field assessments, sideline evaluations, and real-time clinical decision making. Under the guidance of athletic trainers and experienced EM faculty, residents build confidence in musculoskeletal care and acute injury management while operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

We are proud to participate in the Jim DeLapa Collegiate Tournament held at Point O’ Woods Golf & Country Club in Benton Harbor. As a sponsoring member of the amateur golf event, Corewell Health Lakeland supports the tournament through its medical services. Over the three-day tournament, EM residents’ staff the medical tent, providing care and support to participants and attendees, showcasing their clinical skills and commitment to community engagement.
