Surgery Residency at Royal Oak

The General Surgery Residency program at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is a fully accredited five-year program, with an additional mandatory year (4th year) in surgical research.  Through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) our residency program offers

• six first-year categorical positions
• two non-designated preliminary surgery positions
• general surgical training for one year to two residents accepted into the urology program at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital ("designated" preliminary surgery residents)
• general surgical training for one year to one resident accepted into the interventional radiology program at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital ("designated" preliminary surgery residents)

The overall objective of the general surgery residency program is to train surgeons who will provide the highest quality of surgical care for their patients. In addition, our focus is to prepare our residents to become certified through the American Board of Surgery. We provide a comprehensive educational program through a spectrum of didactic, operative, and research experiences in order to encompass the breadth and depth of the field of surgery so as to prepare the residents for fellowship or practice in a wide range of clinical settings. We provide avenues for mentorship through which residents may grow professionally while cultivating a strong, positive work ethic and camaraderie. Residents are involved in surgical research to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and analytical, presentation and communication skills.

• To prepare physicians for the practice of surgery by teaching the skills, knowledge and humanistic qualities that constitute the foundations of critical care practice
• To responsibly diagnose, treat, manage and provide education to patients related to problems of high prevalence in the communities we serve
• To provide progressive responsibility for and experience to enable effective management of clinical problems in a busy surgical critical care setting
• To prepare graduates who are capable of autonomously practicing surgery, providing patient- and family-centered care
• To promote lifelong learning of new skills and knowledge by teaching how to assess and interpret medical evidence in the literature, and apply it to a single patient or population during their careers
• To develop physicians to monitor their own physical and mental well-being
