Research

Each resident must design and carry out a research project with the assistance of a faculty mentor. The purpose of this project is to allow the resident to experience the process necessary to create and execute a research study. They are given the opportunity to formulate a hypothesis, develop an appropriate study design, implement the study, and analyze the resulting data. Our residents are guided in this endeavor with core competency workshops in research design and basic statistics. Faculty participation is provided in an advice and support role to ensure successful completion of the project. Faculty members continue on-going research projects with grant support from various sources.

The resident research project is the basis for a presentation at the department’s Annual Resident Research Day as well as the hospital-wide Research Day. Projects may result in publication or presentations at other local, regional, and, on occasion, national conferences.
