About Corewell Health Foundation West Michigan

At Corewell Health Foundation West Michigan, our mission is to save lives and improve the health and well-being of individuals and families through the power of philanthropy. We believe philanthropy is a powerful expression of hope, humanity, and healing. It’s about people coming together to make a difference — supporting programs that reflect their values and creating a legacy of care for generations to come. Our foundation team works closely with donors to align their passions with opportunities for impact.

Our history

More than 100 years ago, the hospitals that comprise Corewell Health were founded by volunteers and community leaders through philanthropy. The spirit of giving that built our hospitals began with the Auxiliaries — groups of dedicated women who volunteered their time and raised funds to care for the sick and injured. As health care needs evolved, so did our approach to philanthropy. In the 1980s, hospital foundations were formally established to support the growing demand for advanced care and innovation.

  • 1987: The Butterworth Foundation was founded
  • 1990s: The Ferguson-Blodgett Foundation followed
  • 1990: Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital became a proud member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, joining a national alliance committed to improving pediatric health care
  • 1997: After the merger of Butterworth and Blodgett Hospitals, the Spectrum Health Foundation was created
  • 1999: Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation was formed as a committee of the Spectrum Health Foundation
  • 2022: Spectrum Health and Beaumont Health united to become Corewell Health, and our foundation became Corewell Health West Michigan Foundation
