Advanced shoulder-pain treatment

Shoulder pain can make it difficult to do the simplest tasks: raising your arm, picking up a child, or even carrying a bag or purse. And because the shoulder is a complex joint often used for daily activities, it’s prone to injury and other problems.

Corewell Health’s nationally recognized orthopedics team specializes in treatment for shoulder issues and shoulder replacement. Using the latest rehabilitation options and advanced minimally invasive techniques, we’ll help you get back to doing all the things you enjoy—without pain.

Conditions we treat

Our team of shoulder specialists provide routine pain-relief treatments and orthopedic care, including:

Frozen shoulder

If your shoulder feels stuck, painful, or stiff, especially after prolonged immobility, you may have frozen shoulder. This condition can make even simple movements difficult, but relief is possible. Our specialists create personalized treatment plans that could include targeted injections or physical therapy to help your shoulder go from frozen to freely moving.

Rotator-cuff injury

If reaching for something or raising your arm hurts, you could have a rotator-cuff injury. Overuse, age-related wear and tear, and trauma can damage one or more rotator cuff tendons. A rotator cuff injury can worsen without treatment, so it’s important to talk to an orthopedic specialist right away.

Shoulder dislocation

When you dislocate your shoulder, the upper arm bone comes out of the shoulder socket. If this happens, Corewell Health has a team of experts ready to assess your injury and restore shoulder movement as quickly as possible.

Shoulder-labrum tear

Deep pain, clicking, or locking of the shoulder can signal a labrum tear, which is a tear in the ring of cartilage around the shoulder socket. Labrum tears can be difficult to diagnose, so our award-winning orthopedic doctors can make all the difference in accurately diagnosing and treating your injury.

Shoulder-tendon tear

This can happen in a moment—whether you’re playing volleyball or simply reaching for something. The severity depends on whether you have a partial or complete tear in the rotator cuff connecting your shoulder muscles to the bone. Our experts will meet with you to discuss your situation and the best treatment for you.

Services and treatments

Cervical fusion

If your shoulder symptoms are linked to a cervical spine condition, a cervical fusion can offer relief and improved mobility. This procedure fuses vertebrae in the neck, often addressing issues related to nerve compression or instability that affect shoulder function.

Shoulder replacement

If you require a shoulder replacement, we offer two treatment options. A reverse shoulder replacement is for those with severe rotator cuff damage. A traditional total shoulder replacement is for those with arthritis or extensive joint damage.

Our specialists will tailor a treatment plan to you using advanced surgical techniques and the latest post-operative therapies to help relieve your pain and restore your shoulder function as quickly as possible.
