Protecting healthy tissue during prostate cancer treatment

SpaceOAR hydrogel is an innovative medical treatment designed to protect healthy tissues during prostate cancer radiation therapy. This absorbable gel temporarily creates space between the prostate and rectum, helping to reduce the radiation dose.

SpaceOAR hydrogel is the first and only FDA-cleared prostate cancer spacing device. Today, it’s becoming an increasingly trusted treatment option, providing patients confidence in its safety and effectiveness as it gains widespread acceptance in the medical community.

How it works

Since the prostate is close to the rectum, radiation therapy can unintentionally damage healthy rectal tissue. SpaceOAR Hydrogel reduces this risk by:

Minimally invasive placement

A minimally invasive procedure places the hydrogel between the prostate and rectum.

A protective space

The gel expands, pushing the rectum away from the prostate, reducing radiation exposure.

Temporary and absorbable

The hydrogel remains in place during treatment and naturally dissolves within about six months.

What to expect

Because SpaceOAR Hydrogel allows for clinically tested and proven safe precise cancer treatment, the overall treatment is less disruptive.

Treatment

The procedure is minimally invasive, performed with a simple injection under local anesthesia. While some temporary discomfort at the injection site is possible, most patients experience little to no pain and can resume normal activities quickly.

Reduced side effects

Since the prostate is close to the rectum, radiation therapy can accidentally affect healthy tissue, leading to side effects. Side effects may include:

  • Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Ongoing diarrhea
  • Pain in the rectum

SpaceOAR Hydrogel reduces this risk, making treatment safer and more comfortable.
