Pathology Residency at Royal Oak

OUWB | Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Logo

The pathology residency program has one of the largest volumes of surgical and clinical pathology specimens in the country but operates with a small class size; accepting only 3 new residents each year. The small program size, coupled with the high volume of complex and diverse cases provides for a unique approach to resident education. This affords for a more personalized approach with faculty allowing for optimal supervision, attention, and guidance. Our high volume affords the residents continuous exposure to a plethora of complex and challenging cases. Surgical pathology specimens currently number approximately 60,000 annually. Autopsies number approximately 70 per year, including fetal autopsies. Cytology specimens ~ 80,000 cases per year with over 3,100 fine needle aspirations, some of which are retrieved by pathology staff and residents. Bone marrow biopsies number approximately 2600 per year. Our high volume of community outreach material also ensures extensive exposure to biopsies and routine surgical cases as well. The clinical pathology laboratory handles more than 15 million tests per year.
