The Corewell Health Residency training program is a close-knit community led by faculty who are fully invested in making each resident become the most well-rounded physician possible. The attendings are leaders in their respected fields and well respected in the community and beyond for providing highly quality subspecialty and comprehensive eyecare. The resident clinic offers graduated autonomy both clinically and surgically which places each resident as the patient’s primary provider, setting you up for success in fellowship or private practice after residency. Having done two fellowships now, I can confidently say that the clinical and surgical teaching line up right up with the best programs, and residents are set up to match into competitive fellowships of all types.

Corewell Health Hospital Royal Oak's Ophthalmology Department has a long history of excellence in producing competent and confident ophthalmologists, preparing them for general practice, and placing them in competitive fellowships. Corewell Health Eye Institute has developed into a robust clinical and surgical training program. The didactic, clinical, and surgical curriculum offered at Coreell Health would stack up against those at the top academic programs. As with an respectable program, the residency is busy and requires disciplined time management. However, our culture is collegial, and this makes for very enjoyable experiences during some of the busiest times of our career. If I had to do it over again, I would still come back and train at Corewell Health.

As I reflect back on my residency experience at the Corewell Health Eye Institute, I am extremely grateful for the excellent clinical and surgical training with world-renown leaders in the field. The graduated autonomy built into our curriculum has given me a robust knowledge base and the confidence to treat patients who present with various types of ocular pathology. Our didactic and academic conferences allowed me to critically analyze my surgical videos to refine my techniques to become safer and more efficient in surgery.
