Each year in July, the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings are released.
Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital tied for the top spot in the state, ranks No. 10 nationally out of 257 hospitals in the OB/GYN category, ranked in the top 50 for nine specialties and had high performing ratings in 19 procedures and conditions (up from 15 last year).
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings follow in the fall each year. This prestigious list ranks the top 50 hospitals and specialties across the nation. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital had five specialties ranked nationally, up from two last year!
High Performing, the highest designation a hospital can receive, recognizes excellence in maternity care as measured by factors such as severe unexpected newborn complication rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

The CMS Star Rating program is one of the external ranking programs used to measure our hospitals’ performance. There are 46 hospital quality measures CMS publicly reports on and they are divided into five measure groups:
For greater context, there are 4,658 hospitals in the nation that participate in the CMS Care Compare reporting program. 2,847 of those hospitals (61%) received a star rating in 2024. If we look specifically at the peer group of Corewell Health Grand Rapids, just 287 hospitals received 5-star ratings, which puts them in the top 10% nationally of hospitals that received a star rating.
