When Kiuana’s medical team discovered her ovarian cancer, they scheduled a hysterectomy and six rounds of chemotherapy. However, cancer cells still remained in several organs. That’s when Gynecologic Oncologist Zaid R Al-Wahab, MD recommended a new course of action.

“Kiuana had stage 4 ovarian cancer that had spread to her spleen and appendix,” said Dr. Al-Wahab. “Because her cancer was so aggressive, our best course of action was a brand new direction.”

Following a second abdomen surgery to remove the remaining cancer cells, her doctors administered an innovative new treatment called Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, or “heated chemo.” This treatment focuses on cancers originating or spreading to the abdomen and pelvis, and uses a targeted chemotherapy solution heated precisely to 111.2°F to eradicate any remaining cancer cells, while preserving healthy ones.

Dr. Al-Wahab promised Kiuana he would take care of her like she was his own daughter, and since the heated chemo treatment, Kiuana has stayed in remission and is back to work. She credits Dr. Al-Wahab and this new treatment option for saving her life.
