Overview

Corewell Health Lakeland offers clerkship audition rotations for visiting medical students pursuing residency training in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine.  

Visiting students are welcomed into a structured clinical environment supported by accredited residency programs and an SSH-accredited simulation training center. The experience emphasizes hands-on, team-based learning within a collaborative, community-focused health system that prioritizes accessible faculty mentorship and strong learner support throughout the rotation.

Clinical and educational experience

Visiting students serve as supervised members of the care team and participate in learning activities appropriate to their rotation and specialty.

You may:

  • Participate in team rounds with attendings and residents
  • Obtain patient histories and perform physical exams
  • Assist with patient care based on your level of training
  • Participate in educational and professional development activities

Eligibility requirements

You may apply for a visiting clerkship rotation only if all the following criteria are met:  

  • You are a domestic medical student
  • You will be in your fourth year of medical school at the time of the rotation
  • You are enrolled in an LCME or AOA accredited medical school.
  • You are applying to one of the following specialties for residency: 
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Family Medicine
    • Internal Medicine

Corewell Health Lakeland does not offer:

  • Observerships
  • Off-cycle or shared position rotations
  • International visiting student rotations

How to apply and plan ahead

How to apply

Visiting student applications must be submitted through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. Applications submitted outside of VSLO will not be accepted. 

Plan ahead

Applicants are encouraged to apply at least three (3) months prior to their desired start date, as rotation availability is limited and fills quickly. 

Housing for visiting students

  • Complimentary housing is available for rotating students at Lookout Point and includes fully furnished apartment-style accommodations with shared common living spaces.  
  • Housing is coordinated by the Office of Medical Education and assigned based on availability.  
  • During the VSLO application process, students will have the opportunity to indicate housing needs. 

The Pathways to Medicine Scholarship is available as part of the Visiting Learner Program. Awards are distributed on a rolling basis, with up to $1,500 per recipient. Please visit the scholarship page for additional information and application details.
