Visiting Medical Student Program

To be eligible, you must:

• Be a domestic medical student
• Be in your fourth-year of medical school at the time of the rotation
• Attned an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school
• Be planning to apply for residency in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine

No. Corewell Health Lakeland does not offer: 

• International visiting student rotations
• Observerships
• Off-cycle or shared position rotations

Visiting students benefit from:

• A supportive, community-based learning environment
• Close access to faculty mentorship
• Training with accredited residency programs
• Experience in an SSH-accredited simulation center
• A focus on hands-on, team-based care
• Complimentary housing during rotation

Visiting students participate as supervised members of the clinical care team. Experiences may include:

• Participating in team rounds with attending physicians and residents.
• Taking patient histories and performing physical exams.
• Assisting with patient care activities appropriate to your level of training.
• Participating in educational and professional development activities

All visiting student applications must be submitted through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. Applications submitted outside of VSLO will not be reviewed. 

Rotation availability, requirements, and application deadlines are published exclusively in VSLO.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply at least three (3) months in advance of their desired rotation start date. Rotations typically fill quickly.

Unfortunately, the program is unable to make case-by-case exceptions. Students who do not meet published eligibility requirements should not apply.

Yes. Complimentary housing is available at Lookout Point, which includes:

• Fully furnished, apart-style accommodations

• Shared common living spaces

Housing is coordinated by the Office of Medical Education and assigned based on availability. Students can indicate housing needs during the VSLO application process.

No. Complimentary housing is provided for eligible rotating students.

Apartments include essential furnishings, appliances, and standard living amenities such as bedroom furniture, common area furnishings, linens, cleaning supplies, and basic kitchen items. Specific items may vary.

Details regarding housing logistics, including assignments and check-in information, will be provided prior to your rotation start date.

Lookout Point is conveniently located along the Lake Michigan shoreline and is less than 3 miles from Lakeland-St. Joseph Hospital.

Yes. The Pathways to Medicine Scholarship is available, with awards distributed on a rolling basis: 

• Up to $1,500 per recipient
