Welcome to the Corewell Health Interventional Radiology Residency Program’s hub for medical student engagement. Whether you're exploring IR for the first time or looking to deepen your experience, we offer a range of events, resources, and pathways to help you connect with our team and the broader IR community.
Each spring, we host an in-person Interventional Radiology Medical Student Symposium at Corewell Health. This event offers:
Mini presentations from IR attendings
Hands-on simulation experiences
Networking with IR physicians, residents, and vendors
Complimentary breakfast and lunch
Open to: All M1–M3 students
Cost:
→ Registration for the symposium will open in January.
The Corewell Health IR faculty and Integrated IR residents participate in the virtual IR lecture medical student lecture series through the Michigan Interventional Radiology Lecture Series (MIRLS). This lecture series will cover some of the most common IR procedures and techniques. They also serve as a vessel to network with IR residents as well as interested medical students across the state.
The MIRLS will launch in September 2025. Information about upcoming lectures will be posted on this page closer to the start date.
The Michigan Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) hosts in-person events 3-4 times per year, typically in the evening at local restaurants, country clubs, or banquet halls. These gatherings bring together IRs in the community to connect, network, and share ideas. Events usually begin around 5:30 PM with drinks and hors d’oeuvres, followed by presentations and discussions from 6:00 PM onward. Medical students are welcome to attend and are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to meet practicing IRs in a casual, engaging setting. Information about upcoming Michigan SIR meetings will be posted on this page as dates are confirmed.
Interested in seeing IR in action? We offer shadowing experiences with our residents and faculty for medical students interested in learning more about the field.
To request shadowing, please click here to complete the application form. HR will then process your request, and you will receive an email regarding approval. Note – for question 7 on the form, you may put Dr. Joseph Ciacci at joseph.ciacci@corewellhealth.org; for question 13, the surgical nurse manager is Matt Scholl at matthew.scholl@corewellhealth.org. Before submitting the application form, please send a brief introductory email to Dr. Joseph Ciacci and Heidi Gorske to inform them that you are applying. If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Gorske at heidi.gorske@corewellhealth.org.
Interested in getting involved in interventional radiology research? We offer opportunities for medical students to participate in ongoing IR research projects alongside faculty and residents. To learn more or get involved, please contact:
Heidi Gorske (Program manager) at heidi.gorske@corewellhealth.org
Joseph Ciacci, D.O. (Program director) at joseph.ciacci@corewellhealth.org
