Admission requirements

Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) approved school.

General requirements & objectives

The following requirements and objectives represent levels of achievement in concepts, skills, and attitudes for residents:

  • Resident is trained in all phases of emergency care
  • To initiate proper emergency treatment, the emergency medicine resident should be familiar with the principles of continuity of care
  • Training program enables the resident to rapidly evaluate, organize and initiate the treatment of the emergency patient
  • Resident's ability to organize and record histories, physical examinations, diagnostic tests and procedures and subsequently initiate appropriate therapy is an integral part of the training
  • Resident gives regard to expected risks arising from therapy as well as the conditions being treated

Special course requirements

The resident becomes certified as an ATLS provider and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) provider or advanced pediatric life support (APLS). Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital provides funding for these required courses.

  • EMS instruction - resident actively participates in training of EMS providers, a program requirement
  • Weekly educational programs for the staff and residents - held weekly on Wednesday from 8 am until noon. The program consists of the following
    • Book review
    • Journal review
    • Morbidity and mortality review
    • Special lectures

Weekly educational program attendance is mandatory for all residents. Residents on out rotations who are unable to attend are excused from the rotation. See the accompanying information regarding the specifics of the various aspects of the educational program.
