Dermatology Residency at Farmington Hills

The dermatology residency at Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital (formerly Beaumont) is an ACGME-accredited four-year program. Residents complete their transitional year at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital before advancing to the three-year dermatology residency based at Corewell Health Farmington Hills. This residency is affiliated with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM).

About the residency

Our dermatology residency program traces its roots to 1980, when Dr. Roger C. Byrd established the first AOCD/AOA-approved osteopathic dermatology residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. We remain proud of this legacy and are among the select programs nationwide that continue to hold Osteopathic Recognition.

The program includes six residents, with two new residents accepted each year. Trainees receive broad and in-depth clinical experience across general dermatology, complex medical dermatology, cosmetic procedures, and dermatologic surgery. Guided by the National Core Competencies, our curriculum is designed to develop well-rounded physicians prepared for independent practice. Upon completion, graduates are fully prepared and eligible for board certification in dermatology.

Mission

Our mission is to deliver a structured, comprehensive, and well-rounded didactic and clinical education that prepares residents to become compassionate, highly competent osteopathic dermatologists. We strive to equip our trainees with the knowledge, skills, and professional values necessary to serve as leaders within our specialty and as advocates for the diverse communities they serve.

Aims

  • Deliver high-quality clinical training with progressive responsibility, ensuring residents can manage the full spectrum of dermatologic disease
  • Foster the development of life-long learners capable of adapting to evolving medical knowledge and advancements
  • Support resident wellness by promoting habits and resources that encourage strong physical, emotional, and mental well-being
  • Graduate physicians who exemplify the highest moral, ethical, and professional standards
  • Prepare graduates to share their knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the education of peers, colleagues, and community physicians
  • Develop dermatologists who recognize and respond to the clinical needs of the communities they serve
  • Encourage a sustained commitment to healthcare equity through service to underserved populations
  • Ensure comprehensive training that prepares residents to deliver excellent, culturally competent care to diverse patient populations and communities
