Education and Conferences

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is directed towards comprehensive training in diagnostic radiology, with resident education as the focus of our program.

The program evaluation committee is devoted to establishing and maintaining a program that provides a solid foundation of basic diagnostic radiology, as well as an optimal experience in all sub-specialty areas.

Residents are provided with multiple resources by the program, including StatDX, RadPrimer, IMAIOS e-anatomy, CaseStacks, and MRI Online as first years, as well as BoardVitals and the Titan Radiology videos as third years as preparation for the ABR Core exam.

Conference

High quality lecture content is a significant focus of the radiology residency program. Multiple lectures/conferences are given throughout the workweek with at least two daily lectures provided to the residents, typically conducted at 7:00 am and 12:00 pm.

The topics of the given lectures vary from day to day covering the various subsections of the ABR Core examination, as well as covering the extensive breadth of knowledge needed to become a competent practicing radiologist.

Daily conference

  • Conferences are a mixture of didactic and case-based

    • Case based conferences are resident-run, with hot seat presentations in Body, MSK, and Neuro imaging held at 7 am
    • Didactic lectures cover all subspecialties of radiology and are led by a fellowship-trained faculty member who is an expert in their specific field

June lecture schedule

  • In June of the TY/rrelim surgery year, the 8 PGY-1 DR residents and the 2 PGY-1 IR residents formally join the radiology department
  • These new residents will receive introductory Bootcamp lectures in all subspecialty radiology topics, including physics, throughout the month of June

Board review

  • Board review lecture series designed for preparing R3 class for the ABR Exam given March through May each year

Physics

  • First year radiology residents receive introductory physics lectures as part of the bootcamp in June each year
  • Physics lectures are given once per rotation block to solidify previously taught topics and to dive deeper into the complexity of radiology physics, with dedicated review sessions during the ABR Core exam study period
  • This structure is designed to give all residents dedicated exposure to physics lectures three times before undertaking the ABR Core examination at the conclusion of R3 year

Additional conferences/lectures/educational activities

  • Monthly journal clubs
  • Monthly quality/M&M conference
  • Residents in their R3 year attend the virtual American Institute of Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) course, supported by dedicated funding from the department
  • Residents have access to a large, dedicated radiology library, as well as institutional electronic access to many radiology journals including JACR, radiology, AJNR, AJR, and radiographics
  • Monthly DEI/health disparities lecture series in conjunction with OUWB School of Medicine

Medical school

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is the teaching affiliate for the Oakland University William Beaumont (OUWB) School of Medicine, with all of their students doing their rotations at our institution.

The diagnostic radiology department has had a key role in the education of medical students at OUWB School of Medicine since its inception.

All OUWB medical students have a required rotation during their clinical years (diagnostic medicine), in which they receive multiple lectures per week from radiology residents and attendings. This provides exposure to radiology for the medical students, as well as a valuable teaching opportunity for our radiology residents

  • All students who rotate through our department on a diagnostic radiology elective receive dedicated lectures by R2 residents
  • Medical students in their pre-clinical years have interactive anatomy labs, which are run in conjunction with the anatomy department at OUWB. Radiology residents and radiology attendings collaborate to run a hands-on simulation for the medical students at the OUWB anatomy lab
  • Residents also engage our medical students through our diagnostic radiology/radiation oncology interest group, RADSAG
  • Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital also offers the Residents as Teachers Certificate program: a dedicated lecture series and workshop program directed at residents to help enhance their teaching skills in a clinical setting

Extracurriculars

  • Michigan Radiological Society resident/fellow section: active participation by the residents is encouraged and a few residents hold officer positions each year
  • RAD-AID International
  • ACR Radiology Leadership Institute courses
