Program director
Obstetrics and gynecology residency, Dearborn
As residency program director, I am pleased that you desire to know more about our training program. The department of obstetrics and gynecology at Corewell Health Hospital Dearborn, located in Dearborn, Michigan offers a four-year ACGME accredited post- graduate residency training program approved for four residents at each level for a total complement of 16 residents. Selection for participation in our program is competitive, and the number of applications and their quality continues to increase yearly. For example, and most recently during the 2025 residency recruitment season we received over 600 applications and interviewed approximately 72 candidates for our four residency positions.
In terms of the clinical experience at our institution, our program performs 5000 deliveries per year, with a busy high-risk service and level III neonatal intensive care unit. One important aspect of our program is clearly defining for our residents the importance of an educational experience and how it differs from a service experience. While we value the opportunity for them to participate in clinical care, not every delivery requires a resident to be present by design (a well-trained hospital midwifery team assists us during the day). Instead, this large obstetrical volume provides increased exposure for our residents to the many complicated high-risk patients who choose Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital for their obstetrical care. Our benign gynecology surgical experience has remained a point of strength for the program and its residents. The number of hysterectomies performed both abdominal and vaginally is at or above the national mean. The residents are taught minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
We also take immense pride in the fact that our residents deliver care to a diverse patient population, hence further enhancing their clinical experience. Education does not occur without teaching and supervision. In this respect, Corewell Health is fortunate to have a faculty of clinically talented generalists with broad experience in patient care and a record of accomplishment of training residents to become outstanding clinicians.
Our program has strong subspecialty faculty that provide outstanding teaching and supervision for our trainees during their subspecialty rotations. There is adequate and early exposure to all OB/GYN subspecialties for residents who might be interested in future fellowship training. We have perinatologists, reproductive endocrinologists and infertility specialists, gynecologic oncologists and an urogynecologist. All services are busy and provide robust training experience. We are proud to announce the addition of our family planning curriculum. Trainees are exposed to all aspects of family planning including contraceptive management, pregnancy loss and medically indicated pregnancy terminations.
The core and subspecialty faculty contribute significantly to our core curriculum. They provide monthly lectures which cover the core curriculum and guarantee exposure to required concepts and information that is required by ACOG. We ensure that the residents have dedicated time to attend our didactics sessions by supplying 5 hours of completely protected educational time weekly.
We pride ourselves in our genuine concern for our residents’ well-being and emotional health. Stress reduction strategies and techniques are regularly reviewed. The program has both an established wellness and mentoring programs to provide emotional support during the trainees 4-year experience.
In conclusion, while we take great satisfaction in ensuring our residents achieve the mastery of the key competencies necessary for written board passage and job acquisition, we also achieve the more important goal of preparing physicians for successful lives in whatever path they choose. Our residents have made successful transitions into careers ranging from private practice, academic faculty positions, and admission to fellowship training program. Please browse the remainder of our website for further details on our residency, educational program, its faculty and residents, and the beautiful city of Dearborn, Michigan. We look forward to reviewing your application and meeting you.
