Conference schedule

Educational conferences cover a wide variety of key areas of resident education, including department grand rounds; gynecology rounds (with core faculty daily); and obstetrical rounds (L&D/antepartum, and postpartum) rounds. The latter two occur daily under the supervision of a core faculty member. Morbidity and mortality conference is held on a department-wide basis on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

In addition, the department participates in SEMCME, a consortium of eight teaching hospitals in the Detroit Metro area. SEMCME offers year-round research workshops and reviews for residents in training at member institutions and also holds oral examinations.

Visiting student program description

OB/GYN: Students will spend time with each our core faculty group. He/she will be exposed to the responsibilities and duties of a teaching physician, including rounds with residents, private office setting and operating room experience.

Gyn oncology: Students will form a basis of the diagnosis and treatment of most gynecologic malignancies. Students will become part of the gynecologic oncology service in the department of OB/Gyn with clinical exposure to new patients recently diagnosed with gynecologic malignancy in the office setting as well as operating room exposure to radical surgery to treat gynecologic malignancy.

Maternal fetal medicine: Students will develop a competence in the sub-specialty of maternal fetal medicine. They will become part of the high risk clinic in the department of Ob/Gyn with in-patient experience at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital and outpatient experience at the resident high risk Ob clinic. Clinical exposure to the ultrasound unit, the perinatal diagnostic unit and private offices of the MFM attendings will be included as well.

OB ultrasound: Students will be exposed to obstetrical ultrasound, including transvaginal ultrasound, transabdominal ultrasound, and targeted ultrasounds. Students will become part of the fetal diagnostic unit care team and have the opportunity to learn about the patients undergoing fetal surveillance, including procedures such as NSTS and BPPS.

Residency program block schedule

During the first year of training, residents will receive a broad introduction to the field of obstetrics and gynecology as well as general medicine. The second year of training is designed to provide increasing responsibility in general obstetrics and gynecology, family planning as well as exposure to the subspecialties of maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology and urogynecology.  During the third year, residents rotate through reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecologic oncology and may also pursue an elective.  The fourth year of training will prepare residents as qualified practitioners in all aspects of women’s healthcare.  In addition to advanced technical training, chief residents take on administrative duties of the service and assuming primary responsibility under faculty supervision.

When obstetrics and gynecology patients are admitted to Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital, they are placed under the care of an OB/Gyn resident and an attending physician. Residents work closely with the patients and attending physicians, receiving hands-on training and instruction. As training continues, residents become more confident and are given more autonomy in the medical and surgical management of obstetric and gynecological patients.

Throughout the four years of training, residents are assigned one half-day per week in the ambulatory clinic. This continuity clinic provides residents the opportunity to learn about ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology and to build long-term relationships with patients. Residents have the opportunity to work with generalist faculty and subspecialists in these clinics, as well as in their private practices.

Our program also places an emphasis on primary care education for wellness and prevention for women of all ages. Residents rotate in Corewell Health's family practice centers in nearby communities.  This partnering with family practice strengthens physicians in both disciplines.

Residents are encouraged to participate at all levels of clinical care and research, to contribute in a meaningful manner to all administrative affairs that affect the residency program, and to function in a broader sense as a member of an integrated healthcare team.

Call schedule

Corewell Health’s residency program has developed a call schedule that is fully compliant with ACGME work guidelines and allows maximum clinical continuity and educational opportunity.

The residency program utilizes a night float system for the coverage of all women’s health services during the work week. One senior resident (PGY-4 or –3) and two junior residents (PGY-2 or –1) provide night coverage on a weekly basis. On average, each resident will spend 12 weeks per academic year on nights over the course of their 4 year training. Using this approach, residents working during the work week on days avoid the disruption created by night time coverage. Weekend and holiday coverage utilizes a call schedule resident not on night float.
