Healthy planet, healthy people

Environmental, economic, and social health are all closely linked with physical and mental health. We are committed to greening our operations, reducing our environmental impact, and nurturing prosperous and sustainable local communities through our purchasing decisions and partnerships.

Our sustainability pledge

We pledge to reduce our environmental impact by developing strategies that amplify and expand our efforts around what we buy, how we use resources, dispose of waste, and operate efficiently.

Sustainability goals

  • Recycle, compost, and reprocess at least 40% of waste
  • Purchase 20% of total food products from local, sustainable sources
  • Reduce carbon emissions from energy consumption by 15%
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions specific to anesthetic gas by 50%
  • Ensure 50% of newly purchased or leased fleet vehicles are electric, hybrid, or use alternative fuel
  • Make all Corewell Health facilities carbon neutral by 2040

Look for local

As much as possible, we use locally sourced and produced food products. Look for the “Local” tag in cafes and food-service areas.

Look for Local logo.

How we define local

Locally sourced: Grown/raised and processed within 250 miles of Corewell Health or within Michigan, with at least 50% of ingredients coming from within 250 miles.

Locally produced: Products made within 250 miles of Michigan or a Corewell Health facility, but with less than 50% of the ingredients sourced locally. For example, a loaf of bread baked in Michigan (or within 250 miles of a facility), using ingredients that come from outside the area.
