Are you snoring, having trouble breathing at night, or constantly feeling tired? It might be time to talk to a sleep medicine expert.
It starts with a consultation. If you’re having trouble sleeping, our first goal is to review your health history to better understand the issue. If further testing is needed, we use advanced diagnostics to help pinpoint the issue.
Testing may include:
Once we’ve collected the data from your testing, our board-certified sleep specialists will analyze and interpret the results to create your tailored treatment plan.
An overnight sleep study, called polysomnograms (or polysomnography) takes place at one of our sleep clinics, where we will evaluate you for sleep apnea and several other sleep disorders. For most patients, this means a one- or two-night stay in a comfortable, homelike setting that can be scheduled during the time that you normally sleep. During your stay, monitoring devices and video measure breathing, brain activity, and movement. After the study, your treatment plan may include medication, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, surgery, or behavioral therapy.
Home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) can be used to assess potential sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can occur when you normally sleep. Consult your Corewell Health doctor to determine if a home sleep test is right for you.
Additional testing could include lab work, actigraphy (motion) studies, and spinal fluid analysis.
If you have a referral from your primary care doctor or a sleep specialist, schedule your sleep study today.
A sleep study is the safest and most reliable way to diagnose sleep-related conditions. Your polysomnogram (PSG) is conducted in one of our specialized sleep labs, where we do our best to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the night.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol and maintain a regular sleep schedule prior to the study. Plan to wear comfortable sleepwear and follow your nightly routine as closely as possible. You’ll also want to talk with your doctor about medications before the study.
Sensors will be attached to specific parts of your body to track brain activity (EEG), eye movements, muscle tone, breathing patterns, and heart function. Our sleep specialists will monitor data in real time to ensure accurate results.
Once we’ve collected the data from your sleep study, our board-certified sleep specialists will analyze and interpret the results to create your specific treatment plan.
