Breast Imaging

Screenings save lives

One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. If the cancer is found early, treatments are more likely to be successful. That’s why all women should be screened for breast cancer annually after turning 40. Some women may require earlier or more frequent testing based on their health history. Talk to your doctor to determine when you should have a mammogram.

Our breast imaging makes early detection accurate and accessible. You don’t even need a referral to take the first step in protecting your health.

3D Mammogram

Also known as tomosynthesis, this procedure generates a 3D picture of the breast by taking multiple X-rays from several angles. It is especially recommended for women with dense breasts, and can improve cancer detection by 20 to 40 percent.

Breast MRI

If you have dense breasts or an elevated risk of breast cancer, a breast MRI might be recommended in addition to your annual mammogram.

Mammogram

A 2D mammogram is the standard test that uses low-dose X-rays to check for signs of breast cancer. Doctors recommend that women age 40 and older get a mammogram at least once every year.

Abbreviated breast MRI

An AB-MRI is a shortened version of standard breast MRI often recommended for women with dense breasts or an average-to-intermediate risk of breast cancer.

Breast ultrasound

Ultrasounds use sound waves to create images of breast tissue. An ultrasound may be recommended for women with dense breasts or if something was detected on a mammogram that needs a closer look.

What to expect from a mammogram

Most procedures take from as little as ten minutes to up to 90 minutes, depending on the type of imaging. For your visit, wear comfortable clothes without metal features, leave your jewelry and valuables at home, and make sure to check with your doctor about eating and drinking prior to the procedure. Procedures are typically not painful, though there may be some discomfort. Sometimes a mild sedation can be provided. If you have questions before your procedure, you can communicate directly with your care team in MyChart or ask your care team when you arrive.
