Program highlights

Our program trains exceptional internal medicine and pediatrics physicians who can work in a multitude of settings including hospital medicine, primary care, subspecialties and academics. Situated in the vibrant city of Royal Oak, we provide unique opportunities for patient advocacy, community engagement, resident wellness and professional development.

  • A balanced training experience across academic and community settings, offering broad clinical exposure and an optimal learning environment
  • A diverse patient population encompasses a broad spectrum of cultural, socioeconomic, and medical backgrounds, with extensive experience in providing care for underserved communities within the continuity clinic
  • Graduated autonomy is provided under the supervision of highly qualified faculty, complemented by a state-of-the-art simulation center dedicated to training in procedural and clinical skills
  • A strong culture of medical education as the exclusive teaching hospital for Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and a long-standing affiliate of other universities. Residents also participate in the Stanford University Residents as Teachers curriculum
  • A comprehensive primary care curriculum that incorporates the Yale Primary Care Curriculum within both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics
  • Dedicated Med-Peds didactics covering topics unique to Med-Peds physicians, including motivational interviewing, financial literacy, transition of care, and other interdisciplinary topics

The program has been carefully designed to enable physicians to achieve the goal of practicing as a combined internist and pediatrician. Residents are challenged to care for patients across all ages under the supervision of senior residents and attending physicians, from the NICU to the geriatric clinic. Although the clinical material may appear extensive, guidance from our internal medicine/pediatrics practitioners helps facilitate understanding of disease processes as a continuum.

Medical knowledge matters, but this program provides considerably more.  Residents engage in training designed to refine skills fundamental to the art of medicine, including:

  • Health literacy and communication skills
  • Cultural humility
  • High-value care

Upon completing the residency, one will be equipped to provide care patients of all ages, whether within or outside a hospital setting, and will be prepared to serve within the current healthcare system

Internal medicine program overview

The medical service is extensive and varied. Residents bear primary responsibility for all patients within the teaching services. Medical residents rotate through general and subspecialty medical units, the coronary care unit, the intensive care unit, the "staff" medicine services, the emergency center, and various elective subspecialty rotations. Teaching rounds are conducted by each of these services.

Corewell Health employs numerous salaried and hospital-affiliated physicians participating in the teaching program, representing all subspecialties recognized by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Many faculty members within the Department of Medicine hold appointments at Oakland University/William Beaumont School of Medicine, Wayne State University School of Medicine, or the University of Michigan Medical School. Teaching rounds with attending physicians and consultants occur at least three times weekly, supplementing daily work rounds, noon conferences, and morning reports. Furthermore, Corewell Health provides accredited fellowship programs in cardiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, infectious diseases, endocrinology, and hematology/oncology.
