Resident responsibilities

Clinical care

  • Provide pre-operative preparation and post-operative care for all surgical patients under the supervision of the attending surgeon, with responsibilities appropriate to the resident’s level of training
  • Perform evaluations, review relevant data (including imaging and laboratory results), and be prepared to discuss the case with supervising faculty
  • Assist at cesarean sections, typically serving as first assistant
  • Assist in vaginal deliveries as assigned
  • Examine patients on the service as required and coordinate care with the intern and medical students
  • Participate in daily rounds and patient visits with supervising faculty for both pre-operative and post-operative patients
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date procedure and case logs

Education and teaching

  • Provide instruction and supervision for interns and medical students on the service
  • Attend all departmental meetings
  • Contribute to the development of protocols for cesarean section review and fetal mortality review

Scholarly activity

  • Complete one research paper suitable for publication, or an approved alternative scholarly project, during the four-year residency
  • Participate in clinical research under the guidance of the department of obstetrics and gynecology and the research review committee

Resident limitations

Residents may not: 

  • Function as independent consultants for general staff physicians
  • Engage in professional or business activities outside the hospital that interfere with residency training, unless approved by the program director

Rotation schedule

Year 1

  • 7 months of obstetrics and gynecology (includes 1 month of nights) 

  • 3 months of off-service rotations – emergency medicine, internal medicine and ICU 

  • 2 months of obstetrics related rotations – neonatal intensive care and ultrasound 

Year 2

  • 10 months of obstetrics and gynecology (includes 1 month of nights) 

  • 2 months of maternal-fetal medicine 

Year 3

  • 10 months of obstetrics and gynecology 

  • 1 month of gynecology oncology 

  • 1 month of urology 

Year 4

  • 10 months of obstetrics and gynecology 

  • 1 month of gynecology oncology 

  • 1 month of an elective 

In addition to the above rotation schedule, a family planning rotation is incorporated in the 2nd – 4th year.
