The PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program strives to meet the needs of the resident based on previous PGY-1 residency experience, interests, and individual goals of the candidate. The residency program is divided into four 3-month block rotations, with the first rotation devoted to orientation to the internal medicine, diabetes, outpatient clinic anticoagulation service, and discharge transition clinics. The resident will be scheduled in each clinic 1-2 half days per week during the Orientation block. This will allow the resident to 1.) Establish a presence in the Outpatient Clinic and build a rapport with the nursing and physician staff whom the resident will be working with throughout the year 2.) Allow the resident to build a rapport with patients assigned to them longitudinally for disease state management (anticoagulation, diabetes, hypertension, etc.).
Based on resident’s interest and individual training plan, the resident can choose 1-2 elective learning experiences during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter. All elective experiences are longitudinal (unless otherwise noted) where the resident will spend 1-2 half days per week per clinic. The resident will maintain a longitudinal practice in core longitudinal clinics (diabetes, outpatient clinic anticoagulation service, internal medicine and discharge transition clinics) as well as longitudinal core pharmacist clinic. The resident will be given 1-2 half days per week longitudinally to work on research and practice management projects.
The sequence of learning experiences is dependent upon preceptor availability. Given the longitudinal nature of the PGY2 program, no learning experiences can be repeated. Learning experiences scheduled with non- pharmacist preceptors will be scheduled after RPD and PGY2 Steering Committee members agree that resident is ready for independent practice.
