Ambulatory Care Residency Program

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital offers a twelve-month American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited, Ambulatory Care PGY-2 Residency program for one residency candidate. The program begins July 1st and ends June 30th.

William Beaumont University Hospital Residency Programs are conducted in accordance with the ASHP accreditation standards. All programs have achieved the maximum 8-year accreditation cycle. Each program is individualized for each resident, considering previous experience and pre-existing strengths and weaknesses. Each learning experience has specific objectives allowing the resident a clear understanding of performance expectations. This process provides ongoing feedback to assist the resident with skill development and goal attainment. William Beaumont University Hospital pharmacy residents participate in a longitudinal leadership and development program. Residents have the option to pursue a Teaching and Learning Certificate. Residents enhance their precepting skills by a layered learning model on rotations with pharmacy students on rotation. William Beaumont University Hospital employs 20 Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, the majority of whom hold adjunct faculty appointments with neighboring Colleges of Pharmacy (Wayne State University and the University of Michigan) and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in that practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).

The purpose of the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care program is to prepare the resident to obtain a position as an ambulatory care clinical specialist.  Residents will take full responsibility for the care of each patient served. Residents will provide necessary education for both medical professionals operating in the Outpatient Clinic as well as all patients treated. All pharmacotherapy and disease state issues will be addressed and resolved while taking into account potential barriers in the implementation of the pharmacotherapy plan (i.e. patients' socioeconomic status, insurance status, and/or cultural barriers). Residents will practice pharmacy and communicate to other healthcare professionals in a manner that displays commitment to the profession and importance of a clinical specialist in the outpatient setting.

The PGY-2 Ambulatory Care resident must meet the following requirements for employment at Corewell Health as well as:

• licensed pharmacist or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan (including controlled substance license)
• successful completion of a PGY-1 ASHP accredited residency

Longitudinal Requirements

• Complete research project and initiate development of incoming resident research project
• Complete scheduled presentations including pharmacy noon conferences (2), physician noon conferences or nursing in-services (2) and pharmacy grand rounds (1)
• Update and maintain Collaborative Drug Therapy Management document
• Update and maintain residency binder (delete on Sharepoint) and complete resident development plan on quarterly basis
• Precepting of Doctor of Pharmacy students and PGY-1 pharmacy residents
• Present 1 CE to pharmacy staff
• Pharmacy Service hours
• Participate in pharmacy or health care related community outreach events (4) as determined by RPD
• Presentation of residency project at regional pharmacy residency conference
• Submission of manuscript to peer reviewed journal as per discussion with RPD
• Approval by the Research Committee of final manuscript for residency project
• Achievement of 90% of the objectives for the required goals and have no educational objectives remaining in which the last assessment was recorded as needs improvement
