Walk for Miracles superheroes raise more than $110,000 for Corewell Health Children’s

More than 2,000 supporters laced up their walking shoes and gathered at the Detroit Zoo on Aug. 22 for Corewell Health’s annual Children’s Miracle Network Walk for Miracles, raising more than $110,000 to support pediatric programs, services, equipment and scholarships for children and families in need at Corewell Health Children’s.

Many participants, including patients, families, team members and community supporters, embraced the event’s superhero theme. Audrey Kalasky, nurse professional as they walked the zoo’s two-mile route wearing capes and costumes, celebrating the remarkable kids served by Corewell Health Children’s.

For Corewell Health Chief of Pediatrics Dr. Matthew Denenberg, the event combines two things that are especially meaningful to him: a beloved community destination and a shared commitment to supporting children and families.“There is something truly special about walking through the zoo early in the morning as the animals are waking up and seeing our patient families come together to raise funds to support even more children,” he said.

Audrey Kalasky, nurse professional development specialist, sees firsthand how that support benefits patients and families.

“Walk for Miracles not only supports the children and families receiving care in our hospital, but it also provides funding for NICU-specific equipment and education,” Kalasky said. “The event is also an opportunity to reconnect with current and former NICU families in a fun environment. It’s inspiring to see these children thriving and interacting with the team members who cared for them during some of their most challenging moments.”

Special thanks to top fundraising team “Mason’s Mighty Pups,” organized by six-year-old miracle champion child Mason Staib, who raised $6,000 to support other kids and gathered a walk team of more than 80 participants – some coming from other states.

Guests started the walk with an inspirational program hosted by 104.3 WOMC morning show hosts JoAnne Purtan and Jason Raithel, which included warm-up stretches with costumed superheroes, fun craft activities, and reunions of patient families with their caregivers.
