For patients facing the uncertainty of a possible breast cancer diagnosis, access to advanced imaging technology, timely appointments and compassionate care can make all the difference. Thanks to Karen Smithbauer’s recent gift of $550,000 to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital, patients in the Downriver communities will benefit from enhanced breast imaging capabilities designed to support earlier detection and diagnosis.
Building on Smithbauer’s longstanding legacy of generosity and dedication to women’s health, this gift is helping save lives by adding advanced breast imaging technology at the Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer Breast Care Center at the Trenton hospital, while offering educational opportunities for the next generation of imaging professionals.
"Karen’s philanthropic support strengthens our ability to provide advanced diagnostic imaging while fostering the professional growth of the technologists who serve our patients every day,” said Lindsay Vella, vice president of Imaging Services. “This gift will make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals and families."
Part of Smithbauer’s recent gift will go toward purchasing additional 3D mammography machines at the Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer Breast Care Center. Unlike traditional 2D mammography, 3D imaging captures multiple views of breast tissue, allowing radiologists to detect abnormalities with greater precision and identify cancers earlier. Research has shown that 3D mammography finds more cancers while reducing false-positive results, providing patients with greater confidence and peace of mind.
This gift also supports the education and training of the radiologic technologists who use these machines, along with CT and MRI scans, to help diagnose and treat breast cancer at the earliest stage possible.
“On behalf of our patients, clinical team, and community, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Karen for her continued generosity,” said Vella. “This gift is making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals and families in Trenton and the surrounding communities."
