Interventional Radiology

Targeted, minimally invasive care

Interventional radiology uses a variety of imaging techniques to guide treatment in real time during procedures. Because doctors can see deep inside the body, they can operate using only minimal incisions. The result is less post-surgical pain, faster recovery, and fewer risks than traditional surgery.

What are the benefits?

Interventional radiology procedures can be performed using much smaller incisions than conventional open surgeries. The main advantages for patients include:

  • Faster recovery times
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Less post-surgical pain
  • General anesthesia isn’t usually necessary
  • Patients can usually go home the same day

Procedures we offer

Interventional radiology is an alternative to traditional surgery and can help with tumor treatment, kidney stone removal, vein blockages, and more.

Biopsies

A clinician uses a needle to collect small samples of tissue for testing.

Tumor ablations

Cancer cells are destroyed using heat, cold, or microwave energy.

Drainage procedures

A thin catheter is inserted to drain fluid or abscesses, relieving pressure or infection.

What to expect

Most procedures take from as little as ten minutes to up to 90 minutes. For your visit, wear comfortable clothes without metal features, leave your jewelry and valuables at home, and make sure to check with your doctor about eating and drinking prior to the procedure. Interventional radiology is typically not painful, though there may be some discomfort. Sometimes a mild sedation can be provided. If you have questions before your procedure, you can communicate directly with your care team in MyChart or ask your care team when you arrive.
