Pediatric Intensive Care

Corewell Health's pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) provides outstanding care to critically ill or injured infants and children up to 18 years of age. Our highly skilled pediatric intensivists are board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine, and receive support from a wide range of pediatric and surgical specialists. They are joined by nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and social workers who are specially qualified to work with children.

Corewell Health Children’s PICU provides care for nearly 700 children each year. Infants and children come from several regional emergency centers in Southeast Michigan. Corewell Health operates the only Level I Trauma Center in Oakland and Macomb counties, underscoring our commitment to providing the highest quality emergency care to the children we serve.

The PICU features state-of-the-art equipment adapted to the size and needs of children. Mechanical ventilation, respiratory therapy, blood pressure support and monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, and continuous renal replacement therapy are all available.

More than 1,000 times each year, the PICU staff offers sedation for children undergoing endoscopy, bone marrow aspiration, and other invasive procedures. Provided in a child-friendly environment, sedation alleviates fear and anxiety and allows a pain-free procedure.

Visitation is unlimited for parents and grandparents of patients in the PICU. However, visitors should be limited to two per patient. Siblings may also visit, though we encourage consultation with a child life specialist to prepare young siblings before they enter the PICU. Family lounges are available for parents and other family members to relax.
