Corewell Health in West Michigan advances this mission through a robust network of over 4,000 physicians and advanced practice providers, 10 hospitals, and over 150 ambulatory sites.
Hospital-based training is centered at Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals (Butterworth, Blodgett, and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospitals), which together offer approximately 1,200 licensed beds. These facilities include a comprehensive stroke center, around 100 ICU beds, a Level 4 neonatal ICU, and a Level 1 trauma center for both adults and children.
The Corewell Health in West Michigan pharmacy team includes over 200 pharmacists and 230 support team members dedicated to delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care across diverse patient settings. Inpatient services follow a decentralized, multidisciplinary model, with clinical pharmacy specialists and teams specialists integrated into many patient care areas and teaching environments across specialties.
Primary care pharmacy services are provided by pharmacists with collaborative practice agreements, providing integrated support to 38 clinics in and around Grand Rapids.

The pharmacy team at Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals has been providing ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Residency training since 1998. We currently offer PGY1 pharmacy practice and several PGY2 specialty pharmacy residences that include ambulatory care, critical care, oncology, and pediatrics.
The purpose of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals is to build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Requirements for successful completion:
The following learning experience categories are required; however, residents may select among available options meeting the requirements of the category. At least one required learning experience must have a pediatric emphasis (denoted with an asterisk).
Residents will complete five elective rotations. For elective rotations, residents may complete a different required selective learning experience (see list above) with a different preceptor or choose from additional experiences below: 
Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.
In accordance with ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Residency Programs, no more than one-third of direct patient care learning experiences may focus on a specific disease state or population, and at least two thirds or more must be in patient care activities.
Required program activities will be completed with longitudinal learning experiences on service commitment, major research project, medication use evaluations, medication safety, departmental committee involvement, and continuing education presentations.
Additional available longitudinal activities include emergency medical response and a teaching certificate offered through the PEDALS program with Ferris State University's College of Pharmacy.
Non-longitudinal learning experiences are scheduled based on a calendar month and are four to five weeks in duration. The month of December focuses on meeting attendance, project time, and service commitment.
The resident and program will comply with ASHP Duty Hour Requirements for Pharmacy Residencies and will acknowledge duty hours throughout the residency year at least monthly.
All residents complete a training experience with their assigned service commitment team. Shifts are typically eight hours and may be scheduled between 6 am and 11:59 pm, depending on the location.
Service commitment assignments are based on each resident’s experience, interests, and departmental staffing needs. Opportunities include staffing with the inpatient pharmacy teams at Butterworth and Blodgett hospitals, or Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
The frequency of scheduled service commitment shifts will include:

The post graduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and post graduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency training to the development of pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 pharmacy residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions and board certification in the advanced practice area.
The first month of the residency program shall consist of orientation to the residency program, pharmacy department, health system, and training in the service commitment area.

All ambulatory care pharmacists in Corewell Health West with a Collaborative Practice Agreement participate in peer-to-peer clinical review and audits, led by the Clinical Workgroup. Peer-to-peer audits take place quarterly and follow a standard list of criteria. Clinical review happens annually. Additionally, clinical competencies and guideline updates are covered at the ambulatory pharmacy quarterly meeting to ensure medication recommendations remain up to date.

Interviews are approximately three hours in length and take place in January and/or February with members of the Corewell Health West PGY2 Ambulatory Care Resident Advisory Committee. All candidates selected for an onsite/virtual interview shall prepare and present on a pre-determined topic to the team as well as review a patient case to provide relevant elements of the pharmacist patient care process while in the interview.

Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
The first month of the residency program consists of orientation to the residency program, pharmacy department, health system, and training in the service commitment area. If PGY2 is an early commit PGY1 of Corewell Health, the orientation month may be substituted with an available rotation.

The Department of Pharmacy at Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals – Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is dynamic with over 50 team members focusing on pharmaceutical care. The hospital has over 250 licensed beds and an average daily census of 200 pediatric patients. Pediatric pharmacy services are provided in a multidisciplinary decentralized model. Clinical pharmacy generalists and clinical pharmacy specialists, with the support of excellent technician staff, are integrated into a variety of patient care areas.
The Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals – Helen DeVos Children's Hospital PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency offers a variety of required and elective rotations with flexibility of scheduling to align with resident interest areas, including precepting and teaching. Preceptors are integrated into their specialized practice areas they precept and provide direct modeling and mentoring for patient care experiences or non-patient care opportunities, like projects and education. Through the Pediatric Residency Advisory Committee, the resident progress is tracked, evaluated and the resident is in communication regularly regarding residency requirements. Residents select an advisor or mentor who serves as an additional support member during the residency year to ensure residency or non-residency goals are met or to help address barriers or concerns regarding items that arise.
Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals – Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is within walking distance of Ferris State University's (FWU) College of Pharmacy (COP) – Grand Rapids Campus. The Corewell Health – Helen DeVos Children's Hospital PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency has an affiliation with the FSU COP with opportunities for the resident to achieve adjuvant faculty status and teach, mentor and precept pharmacy students. In addition, if not obtained in a previous Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency, the resident will have the ability to complete a Pharmacy Education Development and Lecture Series Teaching Certificate Program through Ferris State University.
