Loren Hamel

President, Corewell Health - Southwest Michigan

Loren. B. Hamel, M.D., MHSA, is president of Corewell Health - Southwest Michigan. He leads care delivery for three hospitals, 53 outpatient locations, telehealth initiatives and approximately 500 independent, affiliated and employed physicians in Southwest Michigan.

Loren demonstrates a passion for strategy, respect for data, dedication to reducing health disparities and achieving health equity as well as commitment to developing a culture of love and respect throughout the organization.

Before the integration of Lakeland Health and Spectrum Health in 2018, Loren served as Chief Executive Officer of Lakeland Health and held various other executive roles with the organization. As CEO of Lakeland Health, Loren championed many successful integrations. Through his “Bring Your Heart to Work” initiative, featured in Harvard Business Review, he shared his vision for connecting caregivers’ tasks to the heartfelt needs of those they serve. He joined Lakeland Health medical staff in 1980. An experienced family physician, Loren practiced medicine for 23 years at University Medical Specialties in Berrien Springs. In addition, he has served Andrews University in a number of roles, including Clinical Professor, Director of the university’s health services, President of the alumni association, and Board Member.

Loren graduated with honors from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. He also holds a Master in Health Services Administration from University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Loren is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He served on the board of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (past chair, member of executive committee), and is co-chair of Michigan Great Southwest Strategic Leadership Council.
