The application for the Corewell Health Administrative Fellowship program will open June 1, 2026 and will close Sept. 1, 2026.

Corewell Health offers fellows a wide range of experiences across the state of Michigan. As an integrated health system, the fellowship provides exposure to both care delivery and health coverage, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the health care continuum. Program structure

The Corewell Health fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive exposure across the entire health system. Fellows gain hands-on experience in various areas while engaging in projects tailored to their individual interests and career aspirations. This program offers unique opportunities to learn at the system level, explore regional operations, and understand the health plan in depth. Working under the guidance of President & CEO Tina Freese Decker, fellows serve as integral members of the system leadership team, gaining invaluable experience through direct engagement with executive leaders. This includes attending board meetings, executive and medical staff sessions, and contributing to strategic planning initiatives through high-impact projects.

Fellowship focus

This one-year fellowship offers postgraduate students an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in health care operations, strategic planning, and systems thinking, providing both professional growth and practical learning.

The fellowship is designed to provide a comprehensive leadership development experience through the following objectives:

  • Strengthen problem-solving and decision-making skills to navigate complex health care challenges
  • Lead and contribute to high-impact projects across diverse areas such as finance, human resources, hospital and health plan operations, medical group management, strategic planning, marketing, information technology, facilities, quality, and medical affairs
  • Enhance leadership and critical-thinking capabilities through one-on-one mentorship with executive leaders
  • Engage in meaningful networking opportunities that foster relationships and support future career advancement
  • Gain hands-on experience in multiple facets of health care management, preparing fellows for dynamic leadership roles

Past fellow projects

  • Aided in the expansion of the Department of Behavioral Science and Lifestyle Management by garnering interest and gaining leadership and provider buy-in for culinary medicine programming
  • Led a systemwide telehealth strategy and development of a resource center for implementation
  • Worked with leadership to develop a five-year strategic plan for primary care
  • Assisted in the robotic surgery enterprise expansion plan and acquisition of five da Vinci robots
  • Developed recommendations for new Medicare Advantage supplemental benefit design
  • Led development of a system LGBTQIA+ health strategy
  • Created a patient and family-centered care foundation program, impacting over 25,000 team members
  • Led the creation of a system transfer center by consolidating eight campus programs into one central program
  • Led the development of a business plan and filed the Certificate of Need for a $10 million, 12-bed Pediatric Medical Psychiatry Unit
  • Led assessment and implementation of scrub color standardization
  • Served as member of corporate Emergency Operations Center during COVID-19 response, including the launch of a laboratory callback system for COVID-19 test results, site ventilator transfers, and safe reemergence plan to address time-sensitive surgeries

Preceptor

Tina Freese Decker, MHA, MSIE, FACHE

Known for her vision and drive, Tina is passionate about tackling the health field’s greatest challenges. After earning a Bachelor of Science in finance from Iowa State University and a Master of Health Administration and Master of Industrial Engineering from the University of Iowa, she began her career as an administrative fellow in 2002. In the ensuing two decades, she has served in a variety of executive roles, exemplifying collaborative, inclusive and visionary leadership.

Current fellow

Chad Houseman

Chad Houseman is a dedicated health care professional committed to delivering exceptional care to patients, families, and communities. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and began his career as a bedside nurse in the Pediatric ICU at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids, MI. Over his 10-year tenure in the PICU, Chad has held various leadership roles, both formal and informal, including his most recent position as Inpatient Nurse Supervisor. In this capacity, he oversaw unit-level operations, spearheaded quality initiatives aligned with system goals, and supported a team of over 40 nurses and support staff on the night shift. In 2023, Chad served as a Magnet Ambassador during Corewell Health Grand Rapids' latest visit from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), contributing to the hospital's prestigious fourth Magnet Designation, which underscores the organization's commitment to nursing excellence.

Beyond his work at Corewell Health, Chad returned to GVSU as an adjunct professor, where he taught clinical simulations for their Pediatric/Obstetrics courses. In 2024, he earned his Master of Business Administration from Western Governors University, specializing in health care management. Chad is committed to fostering healthier communities by empowering caregivers to perform at their highest levels through operational excellence, strategic quality initiatives, and innovation.

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan

As Michigan’s largest health system, Corewell Health maintains dual headquarters in Grand Rapids and Southfield. While the fellowship will be based in Grand Rapids, it will provide fellows with opportunities to interact with teams and communities throughout the state.
