Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency lecture

Our PGY-1 rotations set the knowledge foundation required as our residents progress to PGY-2. The rotations include internal medicine, ICU, trauma, radiology, neurology, rheumatology, and neurosurgery.  A unique feature of our PGY-1 year is our residents are excused from their rotations to attend PMR didactics every Thursday afternoon, thus fully integrating them into our residency program from the very first day.

PGY-2 year focuses on the caring for patients at our inpatient rehabilitation unit at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital. Residents will spend approximately 9 months on the inpatient unit, managing medically complex patients with diagnoses ranging from traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, hip fractures, medically complex, cardiac, and neuromuscular conditions.

In PGY-3, residents will rotate through various outpatient settings to learn core procedural skills, enhance and focus their neuro-musculoskeletal physical exams, broaden their problem-solving skills, and solidify their subspecialty areas of interest for future career aspirations. Residents get first-hand experience in the following procedures: landmark-guided and ultrasound-guided intra-articular steroid injections, trigger point injections, EMG and ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin injections for spasticity management and headache, intrathecal baclofen pump management, and various interventional spine procedures.

In PGY-4, residents will continue gaining experience on consult services, outpatient clinic rotations, outpatient pediatric rehabilitation and electives.

Didactics

Our 12-month didactic curriculum encompasses the fundamental domains of physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as education on wellness, ethical principles, and contracts/compensation models

Our didactics are attending led with the exception of resident presentations including M&M, case reports and senior grand rounds.

In addition to formal lectures, our curriculum includes hands-on workshops focusing on aspects of ultrasound application with injection techniques and electrodiagnostic placement and analysis scheduled quarterly throughout the year.
