Opportunities to teach

Residents at all levels have the opportunity to pass knowledge they’ve gained onto medical students rotating through the ED. These opportunities are principally found on shift, working side by side with medical students from the Oakland University-William Beaumont (OUWB) School of Medicine, as well as away rotating students from across the country. Outside of the clinical realm, there are myriad opportunities for residents to function as medical student educators.

Medical education structure

  • Beginning after January of their PGY-1 year, residents can staff medical students while on shift in the ED. Medical student shift are paired with resident shifts in order to provide maximum opportunity for feedback
  • At the end of the academic year, PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents attend the “Teach-the-Teacher” conference during Grand Rounds, where medical education faculty provide multi-modal didactic sessions designed to sharpen resident teaching tools
  • Once residents reach their PGY-2 year and continuing into their PGY-3 year, they continue to teach clinically on shift, but are encouraged to sign up for medical student didactic sessions associated with the student clerkship. These include procedure labs, Hi-fidelity simulation, and ultrasound labs
  • Emergency medicine residents have many more opportunities to teach and mentor medical students through a variety of programs at OUWB. Residents can assist with EMIG teaching opportunities such as EMIG procedure night or panels on careers in EM. They can also be involved in many other OUWB clubs, such as Wilderness Medicine Club, Street Medicine, and Ultrasound Club, where resident emergency medicine skills offer them an opportunity to teach students

Our residency is committed to ensuring that residents can build on their own medical knowledge base by becoming excellent medical educators.
