Block rotations

Our sports medicine fellowship program consists of two-month and three-month block rotations with a team on service that includes Corwell Health residents, outside rotating residents and medical students.

The educational program includes

  • Didactic lectures and conferences
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Inpatient and outpatient surgery
  • Protected time for research

The fellow, under attending supervision, will be responsible for coordinating and leading arthroscopic wet lab training for the residents. Access to the wet labs for personal advancement of arthroscopic skills is also easily available. 

The fellow will be financially supported to attend at least one national subspecialty meeting such as 

  • American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine
  • American Shoulder and Elbow Society
  • Arthroscopy Association of North America
  • Michigan Orthopedic Society (spring, fall and national meetings)

The program will offer educational opportunities about practice initiation and management, coding and billing regulations, and bioethical and medico-legal issues.

Didactics

There is a bi-monthly sports medicine core curriculum conference on Wednesday mornings coordinated by the fellow. The rotating weekly topics and articles will be presented by the fellow and rotating residents on the service. Members of the sports medicine and shoulder faculty, rotating residents and rehabilitation staff will actively participate.

In coordination with the shoulder and elbow fellowship, the sports fellow will also participate in a bi-weekly Wednesday morning conference focusing on pre-operative shoulder and elbow indications and cases.

Each Friday there will be an interesting x-ray/case conference attended by all residents and fellows. The purpose is to present relevant cases and spur discussions. This is led by the residents and fellows with full participation from the attending staff. Throughout the year, the fellow will be responsible for presentations as the need arises. All sub-specialty topics are covered. Each fellow will be required to present a topic related to sports medicine or shoulder surgery at one case presentation meeting. Participation and attendance is mandatory. 

There will be a dedicated monthly sports medicine journal club, that will focus on articles from peer-reviewed journals. Fellows and rotating residents will summarize the selected articles in terms of scientific quality and relevance to practice. Through this meeting combined with the experience in research, each fellow will develop skills in critical review of published literature. Fellows are encouraged to attain a level of expertise sufficient to participate as a reviewer for appropriate journals upon completion of the fellowship.

This conference is held on the last Friday of each month at 6:30 am and is attended by the entire staff of the department of orthopedic surgery. Cases are selected by the chief residents. The fellow will be required to present cases in which he or she is involved.

Throughout the academic year, the fellow will participate in the anatomy sessions in the cadaver lab that pertain to sports medicine and/or shoulder anatomy.

Monthly grand rounds are presented from September through May. All sub-specialty topics are covered. Each fellow will be required to present a topic related to sports medicine or shoulder surgery at one grand rounds case presentation meeting.
